There are many advantages
in following a regular clipping
program for cows.
Clean Cows - Cows must be
clean to produce highest-qual-
ity milk. Clipping the udder,
flanks, legs, belly, and tail
helps cows to stay cleaner.
Reduces Sediment - Clipping
removes dirt accumulation, the
chief source of sediment in
milk. Loose hair, bedding,
manure, dandruff, and other
foreign material are less of a
problem when a regular clip-
ping program is practiced. Pro-
duce clean milk, not cleaned
milk.
Saves Preparation Time -
Clipping saves 10% of the time
required to prepare cows for
milking according to controll-
ed research studies,
Lowers Bacteria - Research
shows that clipping reduces bac-
teria as much as '79%. Stable
dirt contains many bacteria -
as many as 100 billion per
ounce. Clipping eliminates
large amounts of this dirt,
thereby insuring higher-quality
dairy products.
Lice Control - Lice congre-
gate and feed around the tail-
head, along the backbone, and
on the neck, brisket, dewlap,
and head of cattle. Many
dairymen report that keeping
the hair on those areas clipped
short has proven to be an ef-
fective lice-control measure.
A spray program for the control
of lice, grubs, and horn flies is
more effective on animals that
have been clipped.
Increase your profits by fol-
lowing a systematic clipping
program. In summary, you will

Tile Drainage
May Also Help
At Harvest Time
BY R. Q. GREGG
Professional Engineer
Extension Branch.
Ontario Dept. of Agriculture
The purpose of tile-draining
land has long been considered
as a means of removing excess
water from the soil during the
spring of the year. This allows
earlier seeding than would nor-,
many take place on these
fields, resulting in better crops
for the farmer.
During 1965, field tiles
played another important role
in our farming operation. Ex-
cess rainfall during the harvest
season was encountered over
large areas of the province, and
many fields of grain and corn
were abandoned because field
machinery could not operate in
the muddy conditions which pre-
vailed.
The question is, just how
much would tile-drainage help
these farmers to hanest their
crops? Several factors may en-
ter into this, such as soil type,
tile spacing, condition of tile
outlets and water levels.
Soil type will range from
heavy clays to light sands. Gen-
erally speaking, water will
move through heavy clay soils
at a much slower rate and,
therefore, more difficulty may
be experienced working on this
soil even though it be tile-
drained; sandier soils usually re-
sult in the opposite condition.
Tile spacing and depth also
play an important role in the
rate at which water is drained
after excess rainfall,
Generally with the same soil
type, the closer the tile spac-
ing, the faster the water will
be removed from the soil. Six-
ty-foot spacing with a thirty-
inch depth of trench is now con-
sidered to work satisfactorily
for most agricultural land.
Not only will underdrainage
provide early seeding and opti-
mum growing conditions, but in
some wet years, as in 1965, it
will also assist in keeping the
land in condition to complete
the harvest operation.
If you get caught out in the
field during a thunderstorm,
get away from the tractor and
lie down. Stay away from
fences, lone trees, overhead
wires, or highline towers and
stay off the tops of hills,
