lends itself to singing the blues

;Male collectors of her record
albums have been known to say
that they don't like listening to
her album unless they can prop
the cover before their eyes, and
marvel at her beauty.
Julie was featured on the
CBC's "Show of the Week" last
Monday evening. It was meant
to be an hour of romance and
the blues; not one word was
spoken without the accompani-
ment of soft music. It was an
entertaining hour and, consider
ing that she sang only straight
;songs, it was an hour that corn-; mended admiration and respect
fora talent still surviving. Ex-
wife of "Dragnet"'s Jack Webb,
her guest on this show was her
present husband, Bobby Troup,
a fine pianist-composer-arrang-
er, and a better-than-average
singer. Completely enchanted
by his wife's beauty, he was
totally unaware of the camera's
presence. Her other guests
were the Hi-La's, a quartet who
backs her on a number of songs,

Desmond, Mimi's real-life
husband, Phil Ford, plays her
friend Eddie Ryan.
Mimi and Phil, who have
been married for eleven years,
have spent touch of their ca-
reers playing'clubs and one-
night stands, as a comedy team
so this was a giant-sized break
for them both, Mimi walked
into the part with no qualms,
and confidence that she could 1
pack in the audiences, The
confidence was contagious, ap-
parently, and that is exactly
what she has been doing. She
and her hubby performed a num-
ber from the show on Ed Sulli-
van's hour last Sunday evening.
Mimi as the great Brice,
sings "I'm Private Schwartz
from Rockaway" in a number in
the Zieg field Follies, in the
World War I period. Talented
as she is, with a lovely singing
voice, it is not always easy to
distinguish her words through
those chipmunk teeth. This was
one area where Streisand shone
and one of the show's high-
lights is the hilarious song ly-
rics written to Julie Styne's
music by Bob Merrill. Perhaps
by now everyone knows the
story and the lyrics, and it is
enough that Mimi Hines just he
there, playing Fanny Brice as
best she can. By the reviews
and the reaction of the crowds
she's doing perfectly:
