Meets at Wylie Home WROXETER—The historical research and current events meeting of the W.I. was held at the home of Mrs. J. H. Wy- lie on Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Wm. Wright presided and opened the meeting with a timely thought for the new year. Mrs. Wright welcomed all pre- sent. The motto, "Teach child- ren to respect their community and the older citizens who made it", was prepared by Mrs. D. Dickison and read by Mrs. Wm. Taylor. Mrs. Wylie read a poem," A Happy New Year", in keeping with the new year. A very in- teresting paper on resolutions was prepared by Mrs. Les. Doug- las and read by Mrs. Wes. Heimpel. The roll call, "A gift for the Cancer Cupboard and current events" , brought an excellent response. The Achievement Day for the 4-H homemaking clubs will be held at the Howick Central School on February 5th. The correspondence and thank you notes were read. Mrs. Wes. Heimpel and Mrs. Joe Simmons will be the com- mittee for 1966. Mrs. Lorne VanVelsor thanked all who had helped make the meeting a success and Mrs. Wylie for opening her home. E. F. Newton Farmed in Howick For 42 Years WROXETER--A well-known resident, Edward Francis New- ton, of the 12th concession of Howick died suddenly at his home on Thursday, January 13. Ile was the son of the late George Newton and Eliza Jane Elford and was born at Clifford in 1893, Ile spent five years of his life in Western Canada and has fanned since in How- ick Township for 42 years. On April 21st, 1926, he mar- ried the former Alice Harris, of Howick. Ile was a member of the St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Gorrie. Surviving are his wife, one sun Malcolm of I lowick, one daughter Irla, of Oshawa and five grandchildren, also one sister Margaret (Mrs. R. B. Ab- el) of Listowel and one brother Carl, of Harriston. The body rested at the Moir funeral home, Coale where service was held Sunday, Janu- ary 16th, The vicar, Harold Jenkins, conducted burial ser- vice at 2;30 p.m. with inter- ment in Wroxeter Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Stcuer nol, Archie Steuernol, John Stafford, Stanley Hayes, Ed, David and Clarence Stokes, Reeve Hilliard Jefferson pre- sided for the inaugural meeting of West Wawanosh Council, The reeve and all councillors took the declaration of office. A letter was received from Hullet Twp. School Area ask- ing for final approval for de- benture issue to cover the cost of erecting the new 'Juliet Cen- tral School, which cost has ris- en since the tentative approval was given in March, 1965. Fin- al approval was given. The request from E. Waw- anosh Twp. School Area Board for approval of debenture issue for the proposed central school was re-discussed and tentative approval was given to issue de- bentures in the amount of $2607 000. The E. W. T. S. A. board chairman, James Coultes and Clerk R. H. Thompson attend- ed the meeting and council had the opportunity of seeing the plans for the new school, It was decided to raise the salaries of elected and appoint- ed officials of the township $25.00 per year. Council was informed that the Department of Highways had raised the sub- sidy on road expenditures from 50% to 60%, payable on ex- penditures made in 1965. The clerk was instructed to write the D.H. 0. seeking approval for the purchase of a new grad- er. Angus McDonald, grader operator, requested a salary in- crease to $1.40 per hour or his resignation if the increase could not be met. Council felt it could not pay that much and is advertising for a new operator. Council endorsed a resolu- tion by Mt. Forest council to designate areas of slow growth as a whole, rather than indi- vidual municipalities, with all municipalities in that area to receive the same type of assist- ance. Mt. Forest citesthe area extending from Goderich to Orangeville north of No. 9 and extending to Georgian Bay in particular, to be designated as an area of slow growth, Harold Errington was appoint, ed to the Maitland Valley Con- servation Authority, succeed- ing Reeve Jefferson.
