C. Laidlaw Dies in 90th Year Dates Are Set for Achievement Days Mrs. Tom Armstrong Chairs First Meeting Mrs. William C. Laidlaw, Leopold Street, died at her home on Wednesday, January 5, following a short illness. She was the former Sara Jane Code, daughter of the late Thomas Code and Ann Rathwell and was born near Carlton Place Lanark County, April 3, 1876. She moved to the Blyth dis- trict in Morris Township with her family in 1885. In 1901 she married William Laidlaw, who predeceased her in 1938. Mrs. Laidlaw was a member of the United Church. She had been active in church work all her life and was a member of the Women's Missionary Society at Blyth. She had a wonderful W. R. DONNYBROOK—The Janu- ary meeting of the U.C.W. was held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Charles Jef- ferson with a good attendance. The call to worship was given by the new president, Mrs. Tom Armstrong, who had charge of the program. Mrs. Armstrong read Scrip- ture, gave the meditation and led in prayer. Mrs. Morley Johnston had charge of the study book and a discussion period followed. Jane Thompson re- ceived the offering. Programs for the year were handed out. A motion was made by Mrs. John Hildebrand, seconded by Mrs. Ray Hanna to pass around the book on Trini- dad and then have a discussion on it. It was also decided to try and have a film strip on Brazil, which would make the study more interesting. 4-H Homemaking Clubs in Huron County have completed their 1965 fall project, "Sleep- ing Garments", and are now preparing for their Achievement Days. These will be held on January 15th in Exeter at the South Huron District High School, January 22nd in Wing- ham at W.D.H.S., January 29, in Seaforth at S.D.H.S, and on February 5th at the Howick Cen- tral School. An afternoon program has been planned with the girls par- ticipating in skits, demonstra- tions, and exhibits. A display of their garments and record books will be on view in the auditoriums for friends, rela- tives and visitors. DONNYBROOK Mr. James Robinson of Wa- terloo University spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Robinson and family. Mrs. J. C. Robinson of Wingham visited Sunday at the same home. Mrs. Wesley Jefferson and family visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Josling and family of Londesboro. Mr. and Mrs, Don Jefferson, Cheryl, Lynne and Susan of Clinton visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John Noble and fam- ily. A motion was made to give the supply secretary $15.00 to purchase material for sewing for the bale and each member is to provide quilting material or batts for the same bale. A thank you card and a Christmas card were read. A bale was sent to Northern Ontario in December. The financial report showed that the allocation had been reached. Rev. J. Wheeler installed the officers and closed the meet ing with the benediction. Lunch was served by the hostess, assist, ed by Mrs. Murray Wilson and Mrs. Ray Hanna. Mrs. Sam Thompson invited the ladies to her home for the February meet- ing. F. H. Butcher Was H.S. Teacher Here • TAKERS INVITED—For the cheque that is. Swanette Eva Bragg nails up the prize money for the first Western On- tario Snowmobile Championship to be held February 12. The event takes place during the Stratford Winter Carni- val, February 5 to 12. The winner snowmobiles home with $150 in his knapsack, second place is worth $100 and the show spot brings $50. The course will be on the Avon River, in the background. It is hoped that it will be frozen by then. 4 Word has been received here of the recent death of Frank Hamilton Butcher, at the age of 80. He was a former high school teacher here. Mr. Butcher received his honors degree in classics from the University of Toronto and was classics master at Central Collegiate in Hamilton, where he edited the Latin paper, " Vic ginibus Puerisque", until his re- tirement. Before going to Hamilton, he taught high school in Ed- monton, Wingham, and Brock- ville. He taught at the old Cen- tral Collegiate from 1923 to 1950. After his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Butcher travelled to the Maritimes, and then re- turned to Oakville, where they have lived for the past three years. Surviving are his wife, Bea- trice, of Oakville, two daugh- ters, Mrs. Agnes Butcher Searle, of Toronto, and Mrs. Frank Spoto (Ruth), of New Jersey, and one son, Dr. John, of Tor- onto. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. N. H. Seubert, Florida, brother, Ellison, St. Marys, and seven grandchild- ren. Fordwich Personals sense of humor which was evi- dent in her countenance, as seen in the picture taken last April when she celebrated her 89th birthday. She is survived by one son, Robert E, of Turnberry Town- ship, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two sis- ters, Mrs. Alex (Maude) Por- terfield, with whom she had resided for over 20 years, and Mrs. Christopher (May) Ken- nedy of Windsor. A sister, Mrs. R. J. (Elsie) Powell of Blyth predeceased her. Rev. C. M. Jardine conduct, ed service at the R. A. Currie ,. and Sons funeral home on Fri- day with burial in Union Ceme-- tery, Blyth. The pallbearers were R. W. Powell, George Powell, Alex McBurney, Wil- liam Ford, Laurie Scott and Jas. Laidlaw. and good used clothing of 65 pounds to Scott Mission in Tor- onto last week. S. B. Robt. Campbell of the 28th Platoon, RCEME, station- ed at Barriefield, returned to his unit last week after spend- ing a months' leave with his parents. Mr. Earl Ridley spent a week in Guelph and London. • Mr. and Mrs. Ira Schaefer visited one day last week with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Petzneck in Kitchener. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jarrow of Yardley, Pa. , spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. John Craig. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Wil- liamson and children of London were week-end visitors with Mrs. Emma Williamson. The latter returned home with them and will visit a couple of weeks there. BIRTH STEWART--To Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stewart, a daughter, on Wednesday, January 5, 196ti, in Palmerston Hospital. Wroxeter Mr. John Reid and daughter, Averil of Farber, Alta. , spent a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. George Gibson. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stokes of Gorrie were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Fras- er Haugh. Mr. Norman Nixon, Toron- to, spent the week-end with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Griffith. Mr. and Mrs. Danny Salter, Toronto, were at their home here for the week-end. Mrs. Cecil Gibb and Mr. Duncan of Clifford spent Sun- day evening at the home of Mr. John Hupfer. Mrs. Oliver Riley and Thar- on visited Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McCutcheon, Walton. • Mr. and Mrs. Wellington Hargrave and sons visited one night last week with Mr. and Mrs. Gibson Stewart at Moles- worth, Mr. Alfred Jones of Guelph is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sothern. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Bunker and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Daunt visited one evening last week with Rev. and Mrs. George An- derson in London. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Gold- rich and little son of London were week-end visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Anson Demerling. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Campbell and family visited Saturday with Mr. George Moss in West- minster Hospital, London. Mr. and Mrs. Stan Forester spent a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. Ross Tomlin in Fort Erie. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Timper- ley moved into the village Sat- urday, to the trailer home which they recently purchased. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn John- ston visited over the week-end with friends in Harrow. Miss Joyce McNay accompanied them and visited with an uncle there. Mr. Paul Schaefer of Kitch- ener visited over the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mc- Clement. The Fordwich Ladies Orange Lodge shipped a bale of new Funeral Monday For A. Rintoul Friends Honor Caslick Family WHITECHURCH—On Satur- day evening friends and neigh- bours of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Caslick who have sold their farm and moved to Wingham, held a party in their honor at S. S. No. 2, Culross. Players for ten tables enjoyed euchre while others enjoyed renewing friendships. Before lunch Mrs. Lester Falconer read an address to Mr. and Mrs. Caslick and Billie Caslick and Tom Nichol pre- sented them with a coffee table, flower centrepiece and smoker's stand. Mr. and Mrs. Caslick thanked all for their kindness in, remembering them. NEW YEAR'S DANCE WAS WELL ATTENDED BLUEVALE--The annual New Year's dance and draw sponsor- ed by the Recreation Associa- tion was held in the Bluevale Community Hall, Friday. A very large crowd danced to mu- sic by the Ranch Boys. Winner of the draw prize for the money doll was Mary Craig of R. R. 4, Wingham and there were other smaller prizes. The annual meeting of the Recreation Association will be held in the club house on Mon- day night, January 17th and the bi-monthly euchre party will be held on Thursday evening, this week, in the community hall. • Knox W.M.S. 4 See us first... BLUEVALE—The January meeting of the W M. S. of Knox Presbyterian Church was held at the home of Mrs. Burns Mof- fatt with 12 ladies and two children present. Mrs. Wm. Robertson opened the meeting with the call to worship, fol- lowed by prayer. The slate of officers was read by Mrs. Glenn Golley and the installation service was conducted by Mrs. B. Thomas. Mrs. Eldon Kirton read the Scripture, followed by prayer by Mrs. Harry Elliott. The minutes of the previous meet- ing were read and adopted on motion of Mrs. B. Moffatt. The treasurer's report was given by Mrs. Ross Mann. The offering was received and dedi- cated by Mrs. Robertson. The meetings for 1966 were planned and the meeting clos- ed with the benediction. Mrs. Moffatt served lunch. Miss C. McCarthy Buried Monday Miss Catherine J. McCarthy of West Wawanosh died sudden- ly last Thursday shortly after admittance to Wingham and District Hospital. She was in her 75th year. Miss McCarthy was born in Ashfield Township February 8, 1891. She was employed as a housekeeper in Detroit for 35 years. Her last position was with Bishop John Donovan of St. Veronica's R.C. Church, De- troit. A brother Philip of Selkirk, Man. , and a sister, Mrs. Louis (Elizabeth) Dalton of West Wa- wanosh survive. Last week's Advance-Times carried the obituary of her brother, Austin McCarthy of Vancouver, who died December 22 in his 77th year. The body rested at the S.J. Walker funeral home until Mon- day morning, when Rev. J. G. Mooney officiated and requiem high mass was solemnized in Sacred Heart Church, Wing- ham. Burial was in St.Joseph's Cemetery, Kingsbridge. Mrs. Bert Wylie read Scripture followed by commentary. She also led in prayer. Mrs. Mac Inglis presented a poem, "I'm on the Executive Now". Mrs. Harvey Wright and Mrs. Jack Ferguson conducted the study period on "Mary and Martha", A discussion follow- ed on "Are you a Mary or a Martha?' ' Mrs. Jack Inglis conducted the business. The meeting closed with the Mizpah benediction. Mrs. Chas. R. Coultes of Belgrave has been a patient in Wingham arid District Ilospital the past two weeks. Funeral service was held Monday for John Alexander Rin- toul, '75, who died in Wingham and District Hospital on Satur- day. The service was conduct- ed by Rev. Donald Sinclair of Wingham Baptist Church with burial in Wingham Cemetery. Born in East Wawanosh Town. ship, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs, Charles Rintoul, Mr. Rin- toul worked as a moulder at Western Foundry here until his retirement 18 years ago. He was a member of Wingham Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Georgina Phippen; two sons, Albert of Wingham, and Kenneth of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. ; a sister Mrs. Matthew (Christine) Teller of Parkhill, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
