I don't suppose anyone is
interested in knowing what
some of the hit songs were dur-
ing the past year? When you
hear them, you definitely won't
be! They introduced such sing-
ers (and we use that term loose-
ly!) as The Rolling Stones, The
Animals, Herman's Hermits,
The Byrds, The Righteous Bro-
thers, Freddy and The Dream-
ers, The Turtles, The Mind-
benders, The Beach Boys, The
Lovin' Spoonfuls, The Gentrys,
and The Toys, most of them
from jolly old England, riding
on the shirttails of two other
familiar groups, the Beatles
and the Dave Clark Five.
Single performers who laugh-
ed all the way to the bank in
1965 were Roger Miller with his
country and western hit, "King
of the Road"; Dean Martin with
"Everybody Loves Somebody";
Vic Dana with "Red Roses for a
Blue Lady"; Ronnie Dove, Gary
Lewis, Elvis Presley, Tom
Jones, Freddy Cannon, and two
folk singers, Barry McGuire and
Bob Dylan.
And even a few gals made
it to the top ten -- Petula Clark
with "Downtown" and "I Know
A Place"; Patty Duke with
"Don't Just Stand There" and
"Say Something Funny"; Shir-
ley Bassey with the theme song
from "Goldfinger"; Patti Page
with "Hush, Hush, Sweet Char-
lotte"; and The Supremes,
three kids who made a mint
with every snap of their fingers.
For long-playing albums,
top sellers were Barbra Strei-
sand, Frank Sinatra, Dean Mar-
tin, Bob Dylan, Andy Williams

Beatles, and the movie sound-
tracks of "My Fair Lady" with

Plummer.

The top movies in 1965,
and expected to take many
honours in next year's Oscar
race were "The Greatest Story
Ever Told", with Max Von Sy-
dow in the role of Christ; "Ship
of Fools" which stars Vivien
Leigh and Simone Signaret;
"The Agony and the Ecstasy"
with Charlton Heston and Rex
Harrison; two versions of the
life story of the late actress
Jean Harlowe, both entitled
"Harlowe" , one starring Car-
roll Baker in the title role, the
other Carol Lynley; "Those
Magnificent Men in Their Fly-
ing Machines" with Red Skel-
ton; "Von Ryan's Express" starr-
ing Frank Sinatra; "The Sand-
piper" with Elizabeth Taylor
and Richard Burton; "The Great
Race" with Natalie Wood, Tony
Curtis and Jack Lemmon; two
English pictures, "The Collec-
tor" with top acting honours
going to Samantha Eggar and
Terence Stamp, and "Darling"
with laurels to its star, Julie
Christie; and "The Sound of
Music".
Among new pictures which
went into production this year,
and which the world eagerly
awaits, are the multi-million-
dollar "Hawaii" with Julie An-
drews; "The Spy Who Came in
From The Cold" with Richard
Burton and Claire Bloom; "In-
side Daisy Clover" which gives
our own Chris Plummer a heavy
dramatic role opposite Natalie
Wood; and "Who's Afraid of
Virginia Woolf?" with Mr. and
Mrs. Burton - and if they are
still married when they finish
that, whispered everyone, their
marriage can survive any crisis!
....We shall see! !

Other show business names
to hit the headlines in import-
ant news stories in 1965 were
Barbra Streisand who walked
away with many recording hon-
ours in the annual. Grammy
Award Show; and The Beatles,
who in June were honoured by
Queen Elizabeth II with the
awarding of the Order of The
British Empire. This little tid-
bit of news raised much furor,
particularly with previous med-
al receivers, who refused to be
placed in the same class as the
mop-haired quartet.
More June news, this mean-
ing a great deal to Canadians,
was that in 1967, our Centen-
nial Year, would come color
television to this fair country.
Local stations promptly an-
nounced they would be joining
the network in presenting live
color shows to their audiences.
New York, (WMNS) - With
good sense and some fore-
thought, many of the accidents
associated with winter sports
can be avoided. The first com-
mon sense rule is that all equip•
ment used be in A-I condition.
Check your child's sled before
he goes whooshing downhill. Is
the steering mechanism in good
shape? Does it respond quickly
to the directing hand?
Are the ice skate blades
sharp enough so that junior
doesn't find himself partly im-
mobilized when he expects to
be waltzing gracefully around
the rink? Do the skate shoes fit
properly? This is important,
because balance is affected if
the feet don't have enough
room and the shoe doesn't hug
the ankle properly,
Are the skis the right length
for the height of the user? Do
the boots fit well? Does the
binding holding the boot to the
ski hold fast? Are the ski pole
loops secure?
Good sense also requires that
the sportsman do what he can
do -- and not try fancy stuff
too advanced for him. Going
up and down the intermediate
slope until its incline is handl-
ed perfectly is better than try-
log the advanced run too soon,
with maybe a broken leg as a
souvenir.
Skate, sled and ski in the
proper surroundings. A supervis-
ed skating rink is better than an
unsupervised lake which may or
may not be thoroughly frozen.
A hill in a park is better for
sledding than a hill letting out
into the street, where the traf-
fic may be a problem. Skiing
down a run that may have
stumps or rocks too close to the
surface is asking for trouble,
A last word: Dressing ap-
propriately is important. Tight
pants which don't allow you to
bend the knees, are a hazard
to skater and skier alike; so are
trailing scarves and masks that
can slip and obscure vision.
