In his place has come 1966, a cute little pipsqueak who arrived all sun and laughter, then turned sour and bellowed and blew on his second day on this old earth! Here in Belmore, it has been a year for creating memories-- some pleasant, some sobering. There were illnesses - some of them serious, some the com- mon cold, but fortunately most of our residents were able to en- joy a happy Christmas. We lost some of our fine citizens; among the deaths was that of our oldest area resident, Mrs. Matt Willie. There were some new ar- rivals too, in 1965, and they brought the village's popula- tion from a roaring 75 to a staggering 761 And did you hear the wedding bells ringing during the past year? There were a number of 'happy days' for brides and grooms in the area, but unfortunately, they subtracted from the population rather than adding to it! 1965 was the year that our Midget hockey team came close to winning the trophy; it was the year we acquired a new li- brarian and the library was moved to Diefenbaker's store; and it was the year that mem- bers of the Presbyterian Church said a sad farewell to their pas- tor, Rev. T. E. Kennedy onhis retirement. Belmore School was "shrunk" with the chauf- fering of Grade 7 and 8 pupils Brockville. Mrs. A. Wearing is visiting her sister, Mrs. Archie Wells at Erin. Wilfred Hird took the morning service at Wroxeter Coiled Church when commun- ion was held and Mr. and Mrs. Win. Coulter joined by letter. to Teeswater School, and Bel- more manse took on a 'new look' with the installation of three hawks! 1965 was the year, too, that Belmore became proud owner of street-lights -- "all the bet- ter to see you with", and sud- denly everyone began doing his shopping, visiting, and walk- ing at night, and everything they had been doing at night, they began doing ---out of town! So here we are in 1966! Have the people in Belmore made any resolutions? You bet! --We resolve to always love our neighbour, despite the fact that his cows get into our gar- den and stomp on our tomato plants. --We resolve to say a good word about someone every day, and maybe we'll get around to saying it to that someone. --We resolve to never, ever gossip about anyone in our vil- lage, unless it is to only our six or eight closest friends. --We resolve to give com- plete support to our young hoc- key players and ball players, all the time, not only when they are on a winning streak. --We resolve to always wear a smile, no matter how low our spirits, or how throbbing the headache, so people may say of us in 1966, " I met the loveliest smiling people in a little place called Belmore; why not visit there sometime?" !
