FISHERMEN'S HALL OF FAME
WEED INSURANCE
Some lures are designed to be
lost. At least it seems that way
when working stretches of water
that are both filled with fish
and choked with submerged
brush.
When snags threaten your
arsenal of tackle, it's time to
make some changes. Here's a
tip from the Mercury outboard
people that will turn the con-
ventional plug into a dandy
weedless.
Obtain a supply of the appro-
priate size treble hooks that
cb m e equipped
with wire weed
guards. These
are then substi-
tuted f o r the
original h o o k s,
converting
branch -grabbing
lure into one
whose shielded
barbs harmless-
ly glance off
most obstacles. FISHER
Although practical, this alter-
ation may be frowned on. Some
manufacturers claim the actions
of their lures are affected and
the guard causes strikes to be
missed. This may be true; but no
plug is going to catch fish when
it's firmly imbedded in a log or
trailing a length of vegetation.
Obtaining hooks with weed
guards may present some prob-
lems, depending on the locality.
If unavailable at local tackle
shops, they can be procured
through any of the mail order
outfits that advertise in the na-
tional outdoor magazines.
It's also possible to purchase
these hooks in burktail model:;.
This extra decoration is par-
ticularly effective when used
with metal spoons.
When your object is catching
fish -• not weeds - don't switch
lures. switch hooks, Saves a lot
of trouble.
And remember the old slogan
about fishing waters. No .vag;

Basic Rules for Bicycle Riders
The bicycle will be the
means of transport for many
children returning to school this
fall. Increasing congestion on
streets and highways increases
the hazards for the careless or
unskilled. The deaths and non-
fatal injuries each year, due to
collisions involving bicycles,
can and must be eliminated,
It is the parents' responsibil-
ity to instruct children in the
safe operation of bikes and the
traffic regulations.
' The National Safety League
of Canada recommends these
basic rules in the interest of
bicycle safety:
1. Always ride close to the
right-hand side of the road ex-
cept when making a left-hand
turn. Never stunt or zig-zag.
2. Only when signaling with
the left hand can hands be re-
moved from handle -bars. When
a signal has been made and ob-
served, immediately place the
hand back on the handle -bar.
3. Riding two, three or more
abreast is a dangerous practice.
Ride single file.
4. It is both courteous and
prudent to signal a turn. This
gives the motorist a clear indi-
cation of the rider's intention
and reduces the danger of an
accident.
5. Be on the safe side: dis-
mount at busy intersections and
when it is safe, walk the bike
across.
6. Equip the bicycle with a
bell or hom. Be sure to have
headlight and taillight on the
bike for night riding. Also, af-
ter dark wear light-coloured
clothing or use a white handker-
chieff as an arm band.
7. Riding bicycles on the
sidewalk — illegal in most com-
munities and frowned on in
others -- causes many accidents'
A bicycle is a vehicle and the
roadway is the place to ride it.
Give the right to pedestrians.
8. Learn and obey all traffic
regulations. They are designed
for safety.
9. If involved in an accident
where someone is injured or
property is damaged, remain at
the scene and give all possible
assistance.
10. Maintain the bicycle in
good mechanical condition.
BREAKFAST SAUSAGE
A newly wed groom came
home one evening with a pack-
age of sausage and suggested
that the bride prepare them for
breakfast.
"How do you cook them?"
his bride inquired timidly.
"Fry 'em just like fish, " in-
structed the husband patiently.
Next morning the bride sat
at the breakfast table and ap-
ologized.
I hope you enjoy the sau-
sages dear, but there wasn't
much left of them after Iclean-
ed the insides out."
