RECREATION TOPICS
by IVAN KERSELL, Wingham Recreation Director.
Attendance and interest re-
mains high in the Playground
Program. Last Friday, the
youngsters talked the leaders in-
to going on a hike that was
rather exhausting for the lead-
ers, but the kids had a ball.
They are now looking forward
to the bus trip to Hanover for
the Playday.
At the Playday, there are a
variety of games and relays for
competition of all ages. How-
ever, the emphasis is not plac-
ed on winning but on participa-
tion. The winning community
is determined by the number of
teams the municipality has en-
tered. This year there will be
recognition for individual team
effort but the overall winner
will still be determined by the
largest number of participants.
The idea of Playday is to allow
children to have a good time
and meet youngsters from other
towns.

The barbecue planned for
last Thursday had to be called
off because of bad weather, but
a mock Track and Field was
held in the arena. The barbe-
cue is now planned for Wednes-
day, August 4th.
It should be noted here that
there will be no playground
program or swimming instruc-
tion on Civic Holiday, Monday,
August 2.

Last Wednesday the recrea-
tion director and Mrs. Harold
Wild attended a joint meeting
of the Lake Huron zone direc-
tors and the 0.12. A. Lake Hur-
on zone executive. This was
the first joint meeting of these
two bodies. Problems peculiar
to their respective groups and
ways in which the two bodies
could co-operate to more ef-
fectively organize recreation
programs in communities were
discussed.
Members to the O. R, A, are
elected by municipal Recrea-
tion Committees and the direc-
tors felt committee members
should try to involve themselves
more in the events they are
sponsoring, and thus come to a
better understanding of what
the recreation director and his
staff are trying to do.

The swimming program is
progressing satisfactorily des-
pite the fact that the staff is
working under conditions that
termediates attended a softball
tournament in St. George's
Park, Owen Sound. The Mer
lin team eliminated White-
church with a score of 4-1.
