ROLLER SKATING STARTS
at the Wingham Arena
TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 8th
RECREATION TOPICS
by IVAN KERSELL, Wingham Recreation Director.
Roller skating will begin at
the Wingham Arena Tuesday,
June 8. There has been consid-
erable expense in making boot
skates available on a rental
basis and it is hoped people
will take advantage of the op-
portunity to participate in this
sport.
A few people I have talked
!with say they would learn to
!skate if they were younger, but
feel that now they would look
awkward. This is an apprehen-
sion young people need not •
have. If you can ice skate,
roller skating will come easily.
No one will be a ballerina on
wheels to start with.
The softball season is well
underway. Practices have been
held for three Saturdays and
these will be stepped up to two
or three a week. The coaches
are rather disappointed, how-
ever, in the turnout of boys,
age 12 and over. There are
not enough players to form
teams in the Pee Wee and Ban-
tam groups.
It is hoped more boys will
take an interest and come out
to the practices. The aim of
the Recreation Department is
to provide an opportunity for
every boy to participate in
softball. You don't have to be
an all-star. The coaches are
there to help you become a
better player.
SUMMER PROGRAM
Plans for the Summer Play-
ground and Swimming Program
are pretty well complete but
have not received the stamp of
approval of the committee. An
outline of the program will ap-
pear next week. The Recrea-
tion Council meeting is next
Sunday evening.
The leaders for the summer
program have been hired. Mrs.
Margaret McDowell, who just
completed a requalification
course in Red Cross Water Safe-
ty, will supervise the swimm-
ing program. Working with her
will be two swimming instruct-

Belmore Personals
Mr.Jack Kerwin of Toronto
spent the Victoria Day week-
end at his home in the village.
During the week -end, while
having a bonfire in his back-
yard, some sparks crept into
the nearby grass and threaten-
ed to make trouble for a time.
Though the episode was any-
thing but humorous at the time,
onlookers are smiling about it
now, Apparently, the most
strenuous Watusi dancer has
nothing on Mr. Kerwin when it
comes to stomping out a grass-
fire!
Rev. and Mrs. Howard Pace
of Crystal Beach called on Mr.
and Mrs. John Farrell during the
long week -end.
Mr. Michael O'Malley has
completed his second year at
the University of Western Ont-
