A
oven in the Storm
Railway stations in large
cities could tell strange and
heart-rending stories. Their
hard benches have accommo-
dated lonely souls, not knowing
where to go, For many, police-
men have come ro the "rescue",
taking thein to cells to await
vagrancy charges.
There have been women and
children stranded in heartless
cities with no money for hotels,
when their husbands have not
met them. In all likelihood
the Traveller's Aid put them in
contact with the Salvation Army,
Wanderers find themselves
welcome guests of the Salva-
tion Army, in receiving homes,
usually old mansions in down-
town areas of cities, that have
been converted into comfort-
able dwellings. The Army
seems to have a knack for ac-
quiring these gracious old
buildings, deserted by their
owners because of their loca-
tion and old-fashioned design.
There is an air of serenity
about them that spanking new
edifaces seem to lack.
Guests at the receiving
homes meet a strange assort-
ment cif people. Sotne have
come from the courts; others
are homeless and waiting until
their cases can be processed to
receive welfare help; and still
others may have been visiting
a sick relative and missed the
train back home. All gather
around the quiet table and en-
joy the simple food and ser-
vice given by the gentle, white -
clad officers.
They will be invited to join
in devotions in the tiny chapel
where officers lead in singing
hymns and reading simple ver-
ses from a hook of daily read-
ings, with a helpful homily.
They invariably promise to
repay the officers when money
is available, and most of them
do. They leave the homes
with pleasant memories of a
haven of peace which the
swirl of the city seemed to by-
pass.
The general public has the
opportunity of helping with
such aspects of Salvation Artily
work during the Red Shield
Drive, If you have not been
contacted by a canvasser there
is still time to send your con-
tribution to Capt, A. Ferris at
the Citadel on Edward Street.
