Review of 1964
1964 will have produced
ntany memories, both happy
and sad, for many people and
the folic who make up the enter-
tainment world are no excep-
tion, Canadian, American and
world show business made much
news within the last twelve
months, perhaps ane of the
stories getting the largest head-
lines being that involving Judy
Garland who walked off an Aus-
tralian stage, claimed she was
married to actor Mark Herron in
Hong Kong, later denied the
story in Europe and generally
proved what the world ha s
known all. along --that she is a
very confused gal. Peter Sel-
lers made news when he came
to Hollywood for a picture, took
a heart attack and almost died.
Ile was replaced by "My Favor-
ite Martian", Ray Walston, in
the picture, but after a long
rest, he was back at work in
London. George Murphy, form-
er song -and -dance man, dipped
into politics and after a mud-
slinging campaign by his oppo-
nent, Pierre Salinger, he was
elected as California's RepuLli-
can Senator. And of course,
everything that a certain quar-
tet from England did, made
headlines, from an American
tour to a holiday in Tahiti, to
denying wedding plans, to
having tonsils removed. Need
I tell you I mean the Beatles?

BETWEEN OURSELVES
Parimutuel betting, the only
kind allowed at race tracks in
North America, was devised by
a French businessman named
Pierre 011er about the year 187Q
The name, "pari-mutuel",
means "between ourselves" and
refers to the method in this
type of wagering of putting all
the bets into a "pool", and
dividing the pool amongst the
winners, after deducting gov-
ernment taxes and the race
track's share,
