Madge: '9 Why don't you get married?" Marge: "I can't find the right man. He has to be smart enough to make a lot of money, but stupid enough to give most of it to me." One Moment, Please BY REV. A.M.JOHNSTON Brussels, Ontario. "PLEASE SHUT THE DOOR" "Stop", "Fragile -Handle with Care", "School Zone -- Drive Carefully", are some of the ordinary but necessary signs we see every day. "Please Shut the Door" --how many times have you seen that one? At this entrance to a new year we need to look at that request "Please Shut the Door" and look at it very closely. Shut the door ort yesterday's failures, shut the door on yes- terday's sin, shut the door on yesterday's hurts. Do it. Not only for your soul's sake should you do it, but for the sake of others as well. The one thing that will keep us from living abundantly in 1965 will pro- bably be 1964..We want to live better lives but we know from the past year what miser- able failures we have been. We want to be happy but we know how unhappy we have been at times in the past. Our greatest enemy --the past. How often it is discover- ed that the causes of mental and physical diseases can be found in some seemingly little incident away back iri the per- son's life. But if Jesus is Lord he's Lord of your past. The past need not be a great maze of closets full of old skeletons that we drag out from time to time to torture ourselves with. The past need never become a section of life where old wrongs and injuries lie and fes- ter, poisoning the mind and blinding the eyes. Remember Lot's wife. She looked bacl< once too often and turned into a pillar of salt. If you look hack too much you'll nor turn into a pillar of salt but you will be a pillar and a picture of fu- tility. The only way to use the past is to use it to remind ourselves that we are weak, and then trusting more in the strength of God, and accepting his forgive- ness, prepare to build a better tomorrow. Do now what God in Christ wants you to do: Please Shut the Door to the past For, as someone put it many years ago:" If a man is in Christ he becomes a new person alto- gether --the past is finished and gone, everything has become fresh and new. All this is God's doing, for he has reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ. So I leave the past behind and with hands outstretched to what- ever lies ahead I go straight for the goal, my reward, the honor of being called by God in Christ Wingham Advance -Times, Thursday, Dec, 31, 1964 - Page 5 00111 May the New Year be filled Gv with smooth sailing for you and your loved ones.
