Christnias Meeting Held at Ross ime
WHITECHURCH-The
S. of Chalmers Presbyterian
Church h Plcl its December
meeting at the horns of Mrs.
Robert Ross. Mrs.. Victor Ern-
merson presided and opened
tho meeting with the poem,
"December". The Christmas
service of worship in the Cllad
Tidings was follewtd.
The Scripture lesson was
read by Mrs. Donald Watt, The
meditation was given by Mrs.
Donald Ross, Mrs. Robert Ross
led in prayer.
The minutes we:re read by
the secretary, Mrs. Russel Ross
and the roll call was answered
by giving the origin of a Christ-
mas
hristmas Carol, The offering was
received and dedicated by Mrs.
Johnston Conn.
Legion Party
GORRIE- The Howick Legion
held its Christmas party in the
Legion Hall on Monday evening.
The winners of the draw for
five turkeys were George D.
Hislop, Wroxeter; Jack Brown,
Fordwich; Arthur Forester, Ford-
wich; Helmut Rybicke, Ford-
wich; Floyd Allan, Fordwich.
The turkeys averaged 20 pounds
The Legion members exchanged
gifts.
The purpose of Christmas
was given by Mrs, Dawson
Craig, She said Christ was
born of Mary in order that He
might die upon the cross to
save sinners, All who believe
in Hitn know the real meaning
of Christmas,
Thu singing of Christmas
carols was enjoyed with organ
music by Mrs. Don Ross.
Mrs. Johnston Conn gave a
message on "Holly". Certain
plants are used for decorating
at Christmas. The mistletoe,
considered a sacred plant by
the heathen, is supposed to
have been placed at Jesus' feet,
The laurel is the symbol of the
conqueror, The holly receives
honor because people who
eo• id not read felt it spoke to
tl 'm of Christ.
Holly, like Christ, is always
the same --in February when
snowdrops come, in July when
roses bloom and in December
when all earth is dead. Being
prickly, it recalls the earthly
lot of Jesus as one of pain and
grief and out of that sorrow we
were made rich and strong.
The blood red berries bring to
mind the hour when His blood
was shed on the cross. It has
taken His death as well as His
birth to give us a Happy Christ-
mas,
The .Glad Tidings report was
given by Mrs. Dawson Craig
with 28 subscriptions. Mrs.
Earl Caslick reported for wel-
come and welfare that 47

ing cards sent to e.e Ontario

age of used stamps to the Pub-
lications Department, Toronto,
which are used for building
funds for Chinese churches.
Mrs. il. D. MacDonald gave the
Home Helpers report, She had
made ten calls and had receiv-
ed $46,82.
The Ladies' Aid meeting
followed. The financial report
by Mrs, H. D. MacDonald show-
ed a balance of $71.77. It
was decided to accept quilt
patches for a quilt for the hale.

to U. N. 1. C.E.F. The hostess,
Mrs, Robert Ross, was thanked
and lunch was served by the
hostess.
