JOLLY NOEL WITH Lord of Misrule And Hodening Horse A different playtime obser- vance for your Christmas fes- tivities is the game of "Lord of Misrule." HURRY! Avoid the last minute shopping crushes. We have gifts that will please the entire family and we really mean i when we say (HRIMAS (OUNTDOWN a1 SHOPPING DAYS ;LEFT ALEXANDER'S WINGHAM HARDWARE Dial 357.3631 When your guests have all arrived and have been greeted by the music of the minstrels and the song. of the carolers, it is time for the most honoured guest of the evening to arrive. With much fanfare the"Lord of Misrule" is announced. He en- ters with great pomp and cere- mony and takes his place as the master of ceremonies for the evening. ' The Lord of Misrule comes to us from the Tudor courts where he was elected annually to reign over the Christmas fes- tivities. His word was law, dur ing the festivities, and the ri- diculous commands he laid up- on the guests had to be obeyed. The introduction of the Lord of Misrule into our festivities of- fers an unusual method of intro ducing the many games with forfeits which are traditional for Christmas. At your party, the Lord of Misrule will command each guest to do his bidding. He may call for singing, dancing, pantomime, imitations and stunts of all kinds. Failure to do the bidding of the Lord of Misrule results in the payment of a forfeit, And here another unusual note may be injected. The forfeit, instead of being paid to the Lord of Misrule may be paid to another Christmas character, the "hodening horse: It was the custom in Kent, England, for young men to go from house to house with the hodening horse, an imitation of a horse's head attached to a long stick. Two lads, forming the body of the horse, were hid- den from view by a covering of cloth resembling horse's skin. The hodening horse was ac- companied by paraders who rang the bells throughout the town and begged for money or food. FIRST NOEL First published in English, "The First Noel" is believed to be primarily a French carol. The French word "Noel" comes from the Latin word meaning birth; "Nowell" is the angli- cized version. Both mean Christmas or a "shout of joy" for the birth of Christ, Tune is a medieval shepherd sting.
