UCW Holds India \ight
GORRIE-At the recent Nov-
ember meeting of the United
Church Women, as a climax
to the mission study of India,
the members enjoyed an
"India Night" under the direc-
tion of Unit Four. The guests
were greeted by Mrs. W.C.
King attired in a beautiful
green silk sari, the traditional
costume of the majority of
Indian women.
Miss Lynda Johnston favour-
ed with a piano solo, "The
Hindu Song", and members of
the C. G.I. T., under the guid-

man Fairies, presented a dia-
logue based on a favorite In-
dian fable. This was followed
by a traditional Indian folk
dance performed by eight
members of the C.G.I. T.
A choral reading of a fa-
mous Indian poem, "The Kan-
dyan Dance" was presented by
Mrs. Raymond Gowdy, Mrs.
Hector Hamilton and Mrs. F.
W. Taylor. Mrs. Norman Car-
son
arson featured traditional Indian
music in a piano solo, "The
Kashmiri Song". The pro-
gram was concluded when Mrs.
Richard Carson and Mrs. Allan
Hyndman, dressed in native
costume, described and illus-
trated the Festival of Lights.
The church school audi-
torium was tastefully decorated
with authentic articles dis-
playing the arts and crafts of
the Indian people.
Mrs. John 'Brown,
Former Resident
GORRIE-Mrs. Harriet Brown,
formerly of Gorrie, died in
Palmerston Hospital on Decem-
ber 3 following a short illness.
The former Harriet Sharpin,
she was the daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Sharpin and was born in How -
ick Township on November 7,
1879.
She married John Brown on
December 28, 1906. They
farmed in the Molesworth
district and he predeceased
her June 5, 1947.
She was a member of the
Gorrie United Church.
She is survived by a son,
Clifford of Howick Township;
six daughters, Mrs. Langthorn
(Elva) Vogan, R. R.2, Wrox-
eter; Mrs. Andrew (Annie)
Edgar , Gorrie; Mrs. Clare
(Eva) Harris, R. R.1, Fordwich;
Mrs. Andrew (Dorothy) Gibson,
Wroxeter; Mrs. Archie (Mina)
Irwin, Gorrie; Mrs. Harold
(Alma) Keil, R. R. 2, Gorrie;
18 grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at
the Moir funeral home, Gorrie
on Sunday, conducted by Rev.
Fred W. Taylor of the Gorrie
United Church.
Pallbearers were William
Doig, Bruce Chambers, Law-
son Doig, Stanley Edgar,
George Keil, William Smith.
Burial was in Gorrie Cemetery.

of Mrs. Harriet Brown, on Sun-
day,

visited Mr. George Timm,
Wallace Twp., on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Maitland Allan
of Auburn spent a few days at
the same home.
Mr, Edwin Gilmar is visit-
ing his sisters, Mrs. Margaret
Hoey and Miss Bessie Gilmar
of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The latter is ill.
Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Hastie
spent the week -end with Mr.
and Mrs. Keith Finnigan of
London.

In Wingham
GORRIE-On Friday, Novem-
ber 27 at 7 p.m., a quiet
wedding was performed by Rev.
C.M.Jardine at the United
Church manse, Wingham, unit-
ing in marriage Virginia Dale
Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. George Hamilton of Wrox-
eter R. R.1 and John Newell,
son of Mr. and Mrs. James
Newell of Wingham.
The bride's gown was a •
street -length white nyl on and
lurex knit with metallic thread,
featuring a scoop neckline and
long sleeves and sheath skirt.
Her headdress was a white sat-
in wedding ring band with
shoulder length nylon veil. She
carried a bouquet of red roses
and white carnations.
Her matron of honor was
Mrs. Hugh McDonald of Wing -
ham, who wore a street -length
frock of red velvet with scoop
neckline, long sleeves and full
skirt. Her corsage was of white
mums.
Hugh McDonald of Wingham
was best man.
A reception was held at the
home of the bride's parents.
They will reside on Water St.,
Wingham.
L.O.L. EUCHRE
GORRIE- The Loyal Orange
Lodge bi-weekly euchre party
was held in the Gorrie Orange
Hall. High lady was Mrs.
Charles Scott of Clifford, and
the highest men's score was
held by Roy Strong of Gorrie.
The door prize was won by
Mrs. Edgar Dane, Wroxeter.
St. Helens
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hawley
and Leslie Anne of Oshawa
were week -end visitors with
her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Lorne Woods.
Mrs. Gordon McPherson
visited in London for a few
days with Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Thompson and sons.
Mr. George McQuillin of
Toronto was a recent visitor'
with Miss Beatrice, Charles
and William McQuillin and
other relatives.
Large crowds attended For-
dyce and St. Helens Christmas
concerts this past week. On
Monday evening, Miss Donna
Rintoul won the turkey and
Cathy Purdon the Christmas
cake. On Friday evening,
the winners were Mrs. Win.
Gibson, Lucknow, the goose
and Mrs. Tom Todd, the table-
cloth.
WMS Christmas Meeting Held
BELGRAVE- The W.M.S. of
the Presbyterian Church met
on Tuesday of last week at the
home of Mrs. Alan McBurney.
Mrs. Joe. Dunbar, president;
opened with the call to worship
followed by the carol "While
Shepherds Watched Their
Flocks by Night". Mrs. John
'Maui -hey raid the Scripture:
lesson and the meditation.
Mrs. Edgar Wightniau led in
prayer,
Mrs. Garner Nicholson read
two Christmas poems, "The
Scrawny Little Tree" and "The
Child's Christmas Dream",
The topic, a version of the
Christmas story, was taken by
Mrs. O. G. Anderson, 'I'1ie
Glad Tidings prayer was by
Mrs. Stewart Cloakcy. The
roll call was answered with
Christmas verse. "As of Glad-
ness Men of Old" was sung and
grace was followed by a 1(ly{

Mr, and Mrs, Russell Ritch-
ie of Lucknow visited Mr. and
Mrs, T. L. McInnes on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Lionel John-
ston, Mr. and Mrs, Earle King
and Mrs. Harry King visited
Mr. and Mrs. Cloyne Michel
and also visited Harry King,
who is in Victoria Hospital,
London.
Miss Elaine Miller, Kitchen-
er, spent the week -end with
her parents, Mr, and Mrs,
Archie Miller.
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Vittie
and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon
Vittie of Wainfleet and Mr.
and Mrs. Jas. Gilmore of
Niagara Falls visited Mr. and
Mrs. Manfred Irwin and attend-
ed the funeral of Mrs. Harriet
Brown.

McArthur and Mark of Wood-
stock visited Misses Mabel and
Emma Irwin on Sunday.

Stratford, visited Saturday with

Mrs. Wesley Underwood is a
patient in Victoria Hospital,
London.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ste-
vens, Scarborough spent the
week -end with Mrs. A.L. Ste-
phens.
Mr, and Mrs. Ed Collyer,
Kitchener, spent the weekend
with Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ed-
gar.
Safety Pals Hold
Two Meetings
GORRIE-The fifth meeting
of the 4-H Safety Pals was
held at the home of Barbara
Thornton. Roll call was "The
name of the person whose
story I have written in my
record book", which was an-
swered by 14 members.
Discussion --
Mrs. Russell Adams gave
notes on "Safety First". Mrs.
Clarence Stokes gave out
phamphlets and Mrs. Doran
Thornton, R. N. spoke on First
Aid.
The sixth meeting was held
at the home of Judy King.
Eleven members answered the
roll call, "One accident ha-
zard in my home and what I
am going to do about it."
Mrs. Clarence Stokes dis-
tributed phamphlets and Mrs.
Russell Adams led the discus-
sion and gave notes on "Care
of the Body."
