Here are a few favorites of nine you might enjoy and can clip for future use as well. There will he more recipes on coo.<ies coming up. CHOCOLATE DROPS 8 0z. semi -sweet chocolate (Melted) 8 egg yolks cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cur ; lanched almonds (ground fine) 7/8 cups sifted pastry flour pinch salt Method; Set oven at 350 degrees. - Grease and flour baking sheet while choco'ate is melting, beat egg olns and sugar to- gether until light and fluff) . Add vanilla, stir in melted chocolate, grated almonds and flour mixed with salt. Drop small spoonfuls on sheet leav- ing one inch apart. Bake 25 min. or till cookies are crack- led and dry. Makes about 30. POPPY SEED BARS 14 cups butter 1 cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 11 cups grated almonds (un - blanched) 3 cups sifted pastry flour a tsp. each cinnamon, ginger and mace 1 egg beaten I cup poppy seeds Method; Set oven at 315 degs. Light- ly grease an 11 by 16 jelly roll pan. Cream butter and sugar together. Add vanilla and al- monds. Stir in flour and spices. Press dough into prepared pan. Chill dough until firm. Brush top with beaten whole egg and sprinkle t" ith poppy seeds. Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly before carting into Lars. Makes about 96. MACAROONS 1 cup unblanched almonds, ground 1 cup sugar 3 egg '.bites tsp. almond extract z tsp. vanilla cherries for topping Method; Set oven at 400 degrees. Grease and flour a baking sheet. Combine almonds with 8/4 cup sugar. Add egg whites a little at a time using enough to make a consistency slightly softer than trashed potatoes. Beat hard for two min. Add almond and vanilla extract. Press through a round or fluted cookie cutter two inches in dia- meter and one inch apart. Sprinkle with remaining sugar and press a colored cherry into each cooxie. Bake 15 min. or until tops crackle and are light- ly ightly brown. Makes about 16. MACAROON JAM ROLL 11 cups nuts, almonds, walnuts filberts or pecans 1/3 cup sugar 2 egg whites (unbeaten) 12 cups hot jam or preserves (raspberry, strawberry, apricot) Method; Set oven at 350 degrees. Grease baking sheet. Grate or grind nuts fine. Mix nuts with sugar. Add enough egg white, a little at a time, to bind mix- ture into a paste firm enough to shape. Form into a long roll 12 inches in diameter. Place on prepared baking sheet. Us- ing index fingers dipped in wa- ter make a deep trench down the centre of the roll. Be sure ends are filled in so jam will not run out. Bake 15 to 20 min. or until roll is lightly browned. Heat jam until thick and boiling hot. Immediatel y upon taking nut roll from oven fill trench with hot jam. Cool thea loosen from cookie sheet. When completely cool cut dia- gonally into 1 -inch slices. Makes about 30. Mr. and Mrs. S. 3eattie Honored on Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Beat- tie, whose 25th wedding anni- versary was on November 25, were surprised by members of their families on Friday night. The group met downtown and arrived at the Beattie home in a body. Those present were Mr. and Mrs, Elmer McBride, Mr. and Mrs. Walter McBride and son Douglas, and Mrs. Alvin Mc- Bride of Exeter, Mrs. Edgar Mc- Bride of Kipper, Mr. and Mrs. George Michie and Lloyd of Belgrave, Mrs. John Kemp of Toronto Robert Beattie of Winthrop and Miss Karen Beat- tie of London. Cards were played and Mr. and Mrs. Beattie were presented with gifts. The guests served lunch and wedding cake. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. George Michie and family and Mrs. Kemp were dinner guests with the Beattie family. RECEIVE SILVER TRAY Misses Phyllis and Marguer - ite Johns were hostesses for a surprise party after four on Thu- rsday. Members of the Wing - ham Public School staff, for- mer teachers and J. H. Kinkead, public school inspector, were present. The 26 guests enjoyed a social time. Mrs. Beattie was Rainbow Club Euchre Party The Rainbow Club euchre was held on Monday of last week. Fifteen tables were in play. Mrs. A. Leaver was the high lady and Stewart McBurney was high man. Mrs. Howard Fuller won the high prize for lady playing as a man. The consolation prizes went to Mrs. V. Hastings, JimCurrie and Mrs. Ethel Aitchison, play- ing as a man. Mrs. McTavish won the draw pri • e. Members Join Auxiliary About.40 members of the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion attended last week's meeting and election of officers. Mrs. Bill Hogg was pianist. After the opening exercises Mrs. Jack Gorrie draped the charter in memory of Mrs. Alex Corri- gan. Kalish WROXETER-Gorrie United Church was the scene of a wed- ding on Saturday, November 21, when Rev. F. W. The bridal gown of 11}1011 chiffon lace over white taffeta was waltz -length witli bouffant skirt and the bolero jacket featured a dautty collar and lily -point sleeves. Her shoul- der -length vel of silk illusion was held b} a headdress of silk rosettes. She carried red and white roses. The groom's sister, Mrs. Ebner Weher of Clifford, was matron of honor. Lunch was served and a wed- ding cake, suitably decorated and topped with a basket of flowers, was cut and served. St. Paul's Bazaar Well Attended The W.A. Guild, St. Paul's Anglican Church held a very successful Christmas tea and bazaar last Wednesday after- noon. The event was opened at 3 o'clock by the rector, the Rev. C. F. Johnson, who wel- comed the guests. Mrs. Elwood Armitage, president, received at the door. The large centre table was attractive with white madeira cloth and a large brass cande- labra containing nine red tapers. The tea tables were centered with red candles set in poinset- tias. The tea room assistants were members of the Evening Guild. A lovely display of Christ- mas decorations, aprons, bak- ing and the always tempting country store were all well pat- ronized, as was the tea room. A new feature this year was the A. Y. P. A. candy booth and the Evening Guild's display of Bible story books for children, which were for sale. C.W.L. Euchre The C. W. L. held their weekly euchre Monday evening with•eipht tables in play. High lady was Mrs. Alf Lockridge, high man, Mike Cummins, The lucky draw was won by Mrs. Lorne Archer, Mrs. Ed. Bauer and Mrs. Alex Skinn were hostesses. The next card party will be held next Tuesday evening. Last week's euchre had 12 tables in play. High lady was Mrs. Eugene Devereaux and high man was Roy McKay. The door prize was won by Mrs. Mike Willie. The hostesses were Mrs. Ed. Rich and Mrs. Keith Montgomery. RECIPE OF THE MONTH By the Ontario Tender Fruit Institute "Buy Canada Choice Canned Fruit" CLOVED PEARS Add Spice to Holiday Ham and Turkey 15 oz. can Canada Choice Ontario Grown Pears 1/2 cup vinegar 1 stick cinnamon 8 whole cloves 12 whole allspice Drain pears. Reserve juice and combine with cin- namon, cloves, allspice and vinegar. Marinate pears in spiced juice in refrigerator 24 hours. Drain and place cut -side up on platter. Garnish by studding around the indentation in each pear half with whole cloves.
