Nearly one and a half million people suffer disabling injuries. Over six billion dollars annually are paid in costs. The only reason is bad driving, Definitely something must be done about this traffic -accident problem before it gets too far out of hand. The only solution to this drastic problem is to teach people to become good drivers. Thus driver education is the best hope there is. Driver education is taught in many high schools with three main goals in mind. They are safety, smooth traffic, and en- joyable driving. Many people possess so much pride and ignorance that they will not even consider taking a drivers' education course. They think that they are expert dri- vers as soon as they get behind the wheel and 'push' eighty and still stay on the road. How ma- ny of these people escape acci- dents? Just remember, "Many people die from the effects of gas; some inhale it; others set a match to it, but most of them just step on it." It has been found that foreve- ry dollar spent on driver educa- tion, three dollars have been saved in accidents prevented, thus illustrating the immense value of such a course, To some thoughtless people, the automobile is only a sym- bol of power which they use as a means of expressing anger or impatience, or perhaps simply to show off, Sportsmanship is a quality essential for every good driver. Everyone will have noticed the driver who lacks enough pa- tience to wait for the traffic light to turn green or lacks enough courtesy to wait his turn at a busy intersection. Even the horn -blowing driver still exists in society. What is achieved by all this is only a few enemies or perhaps even the loss of many valuable lives. As I stated before, some re - OVERNIGHT FREIGHT We haul to and from Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchen- er, London, Stratford and Woodstock. Only by supervised driving exper• ience can a person learn ex- pertly to keep a vehicle under control. It is by no means easy to accomplish this feat. Smooth driving and controlled driving go hand in hand. When a person is considered a smooth, controlled driver, he can start, drive, and stop his car while a light object, such as a cigarette package, remains sitting up on the dashboard. Try this test just to prove to yourself what kind of driver you really are. In the drivers' education course, hours are spent in the classroom as well as in the car. It is essential that the opera- tion of a car and mechanics of a car should be taught. If a person has not acquired the knowledge of what to do in specific incidents, it could prove serious. Thus rules and regulations, which everyone should know, are taught and discussed fully in order to teach safer driving. Since the only remaining hope in traffic -accident pre- vention is Driver Education, why not encourage and support it? --Brenda MacLennan 13A Mustangs Win First Game I think last Friday should be circled on all the High School calendars, for Wingham finally won a football game. The Stratford Northwestern Huskies suffered a 20-0 defeat under the hooves of the Mustangs. John Watson opened the scoring early in the game with a five yard dive to put Wingham ahead 6-0. The attempt at the convert failed, About seven minutes after the second quart- er started, John Watson scored again on a 20 yard run around right end into puddles near the goal line. The third quarter was score- less but not uneventful for one Stratford player was taken to the hospital with an injured leg. Norman Corrin scored the final touchdown in the last quarter in a 15 yard end run, This might have marked a point in football history of 1964-65 for Mr. Campbell says he is sure that Wingham can win their last two games giving them a 3-3 record. Today the Mustangs play Stratford Central and who knows, they might win again, 0--0--0 A king touched my grand- father on the head with a sword and made him a duke. That's nothing. Once an Indian hit my uncle over the head with a tomahawk and made him an angel. Subscription Sales Besides keeping our teams on a winning streak we, the stu- dents of W. D. H. S. have launched our Magazine Sales, for this year. Tuesday was the beginning and we are having collection days every second school day, Tomorrow, Friday, will be our second collection day and we hope it will be twice as large as the one yester- day, The profits made on the magazine sales are divided so that the school receives 30-0 per cent. This money is put to good use by the student council. In recent years we 'have purchased a time clock for the gym, a record-player and supported a child in a for- eign country. We have several good ideas for this year's'mon- ey besides helping some of our clubs in the school. We certainly hope the citiz- ens of Wingham and district will realize the value of their subscriptions to our school and save them for one of our stu- dents, By the way students, I hope you are working very hard at trying to sell at least one sub- scription, If you sell only ane you will receive a W, D.11. S pennant. If you sell three sub- scriptions, you will be given a set of "kissing dolls" . The more subscriptions you sen, the higher you rise on the plateau of prizes. I hope you will get out and sell as many subscrip- tions as possible. Better TV Reception without guy wires!
