ready wit and goad humor and
her interests were keen and var-
ied. During her active years
she was widely called upon as a
public speaker and had address-
ed many women's organizations
on a wide range of topics. In
Goderich she was one of the
early members of a well-known
amateur dramatic group,
She had taken an active
place in the church organiza-
tions in all the towns in which
she had lived and was a charter
member of the Ayton Women's
Institute which was formed well
over 50 years ago. In her later
years she became interested in
painting and the homes of ma-
ny of her friends contain sam-
ples of her expressive work. She
was also keenly interested in
the newspapers published by her
sons during the past twenty
years and she had written a
weekly women's column fo r
the newspapers in Exeter and
Mildmay.
Her abiding interest and in-
fluence, however, was in edu-
cation in its broadest sense.
An avid reader, she continued
throughout her life to increase
her own knowledge and she ne-
ver failed to arouse a similar
interest in those with whom she
came in contact, Her greatest
legacy to her family was a deep
respect for intelligence and
truth.
