Takes I.T.U. Just Two Weeks
To Put Shop out of Business
It took Elmer Stewart 11
years to build up a 15 -man
printing shop.
But it took the International
Typographers Union just two
weeks, he says, to set him back
where he began - on his own as
a one-man band.
Elmer Stewart's typesetting
firm - Inter -city Typesetting
Ltd,- employed 15 staff, ten
of whom were members of the
ITU.
It had taken Mr. Stewart and
his partner, David Russell, 11
years to build the company up
to such a size and they were
happily handling just about
every worthwhile typesetting
account round about the Osha-
wa district.
Then some weeks ago the
ITU called a strike at General
Printers Ltd. - a printing firm
in Oshawa which supplied 60
per cent of Inter -city's busin-
ess.
To set or not to set -that was
the question. Mr. Stewart and
Mr. Russell were aware that
there was no solution; another
firm's strike was going to close
them down.

HELPING TO MAKE WINGHAM
A BETTER PLACE TO SHOP
type for General Printers and
they walked off the job," Mr.
Stewart said, "My partner and
I were also told that if we set
the type ourselves they would
also strike."
"Well, we couldn't see any
other way out so we fired the
whole bunch (they weren't un-
der contract) and liquidated the
business," he said.
Two weeks and suddenly a
successful business was no more,
However, Mr. Stewart saw
another avenue opening for
himself: he bought one of the
company's machines at the li-
quidation sale and established
the Stewart Typesetting Com-
pany.
Now, with the help of a sec-
retary, he runs a one-man op-
eration that shows every sign of
being as big as Inter -city but,
if it's left up to Elmer Stewart,
it won't be.
"Right now, I'm doing fine,"
he said, "I do all my own
work and I've got no union
members to contend with,"
He intends to tackle jobs he
can do by himself: "I've had
enough of unions," he remark-
ed with some bitterness. --The
Independent Businessman.

TO APPEASE GOD'S WRATH
A deodand is an obsolete
legal term for anything that had
directly caused a person's death,
as for example, a sword or sil-
ver cup containing poison.
These articles, according to the
old rule of the common law of
England, were forfeited to the
king, presumably to be devot-
ed by him to pious uses - 'to
appease God's wrath" --though
often finding a way to his privy
purse. Deodands were abolish-
ed in 1846, fortunately, for it
would be rather difficult to for-
feit, say, an exploded time
bomb.
