Study to Be Made

the Civic Holiday week -end.
ENGAGE ENGINEERS
The engineering firm of
Crysler, Davis and Jorgensen,
Willowdale, has been engaged
to carry out the engineering
studies. Reports on the projects
are to be submitted to the Au-
thority by early September.
This move marks a switch in
the water conservation program
of the Authority. Until this
summer, water conservation
was encouraged by offering
grants for the building of farm
ponds. Development of reser-
voirs was avoided because of
the high cost involved.
Ontario Government action
this year lifted farm pond con-
trol from conservation authori-
ties and placed them under the
jurisdiction of county agricul-
tural representatives. At the
same time the green light was
given authorities to consider es-
tablishment of reservoirs under
the 75-25 per cent agreement.
ELMA REEVE CHAIRMAN
With this shift in policy,
water conservation passed from
the Farm Pond Advisory Board
headed by Harry Tebbutt of
Hullett Township to the Flood
Control Board of which Reeve
John Coghlin of Elma Township
is chairman.
Mr. Coghlin recently toured
some of the possible reservoir
sites in the Maitland watershed
with consulting engineers. Ile

Councillor Callan wondered
if the town could he forced to
rnect heavy maintenance costs
in the future, if as an example,
the darts were breached by a
big flood. Keri Musclow, the
Authority's field officer, said
this would not he maintenance,

Following the discussion
council went into a separate
session and passed the necessary
resolutions requesting the Mait-
land Valley Conservation Au-
thority to take over the project
[n another motion council
agreed to pick up the tab if the
local share of financing exceed-
ed the $7,500 guaranteed by
the P. 1). C. Council requested
the Authority to proceed as
rapidly as possible with the
work.
Council also discussed prob-
lems in connection with the
llowson Darn, and decided to
request the Authority to have a
study made of the dant and
pond to see what could be done
to overcome flood problems
and to provide better control of
water in tittles of flood condi-
tions,
An earthquake bit an Indian
village, and members of the
tribe came to the chief for an
explanation.
"You dance Sun Dance, get
sunshine," he explained.
"Dance Rai.0 Dance, get rain.
Dance Corn Dance, get corn.
Now -What you expect when
everybody dance Twist?"
vey recommends 20 sites for
possible reservoirs on the var-
ious branches of the Maitland.
Included are several on the
north branch of the river, one
west of Belgrave, another east
of Brussels and one on the Mait-
land downstream from Wing -
ham.
Reservoirs may never be
built on some of the sites, said
Mr. Coghlin, but development
of others no doubt will be given
consideration by the authority
in the future.
Robert Gibson and E. 11,
Strong appeared before the au-
thority executive as a deputa-
tion from Howick Council in
connection with a proposed
park for Fordwich. They
agreed however, to shelve the
issue until the engineers' report
is received on the dam project.
-Mrs, George Walling, Ste •
yen and Michael spent last
week with her parents, Mr, and
Mrs. John Nicholls at N o r t h
Bay and her sister, Beverley Ni-
cholls, returned home with her
for a holiday, While there
they had a family reunion and
the three sisters and three bro-
thers were all together for the
first time in ten years.
