Copper Wire to Check Root Growth A plugged drain can be quite a problem and even more bothersome is the task of dig- ging it up for repairs. It seems that now there is. a solution to the problem of root clogged drains. Reporting on a test where a No. 10 copper wire was strung through a septic tank drain 13 years ago Professor F. R. bore of the engineering science de- partment at the Ontario Agric- ultureal College, Guelph, says that "although the tile drain ran under a grove of pines and privet hedges where root growth was quite vigorous, it still gave trouble free service." When dug up for inspection the tiles were found surrounded by root 223C, 3 FOR SAFETY YOU KEEP YOUR MONEY IN THE BANK YOUR GRAIN CROPS ALSO REQUIRE SAFE KEEPING THEY'RE AS GOOD AS MONEY IN THE BANK Protect Your Investment INVESTIGATE THE WESTEEL STEEL GRANARIES NOW Easy to erect — complete instructions provided. 1350 bushel capacity. It is thought that the copper comes in contact with a dilute solution of electrolite such as sulphuric acid. Thus the cop- per wire creates a condition un- favorable to root growth. The demonstration does not prove conclusively that copper is a cure-all to prevent root growth in drains, though it does seem to help. After hearing of FARM SERVICE Electrical service is now available to 95 per cent of the farms in Ontario including thousands in remote northern areas. To serve its rural cus- tomers, Ontario Hydro operates over 48, 000 miles of distribu- tion line. the test one tile company has started manufacturing root re- sistant tile. It is simply a clay tile with a groove scored on the inside in which a one -foot length of copper wire is insert- ed. t COMMON RAGWEED Weed of the Week series ONTARIO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Ragweed pollen is the direct cause of some 80% of all hay fever. The ragweed pollen season in Ontario is approxim- ately from August 15th to Sept- ember 15th and this is the most critical period for hay fever sufferers allergic to ragweed pollen. Ragweed is a native of North America and occurs in concen- tration throughout most of Southern Ontario and the bor- dering States. With the ac- ceptance of chemical weed control as fairly standard farm practice, it is no longer a threat to crop production. It thrives mostly in waste places, disturbed grass cover, poor grass cover, particularly in un- developed and partially devel- oped suburban lands. This brings the greatest pollen con- centration aloscst to the larg- est population centres, with the greater numbers of hay fe- ver sufferers. the health hazard to ragweed Pollen. The closer the victim is to the source of the infesta- tion, the more frequent and severe will he the attacks of hay fever. Therefore it be- comes the duty of every citiz- en, sufferer or not, to recog- nize ,uid destroy all ragweed plants on sight, Its fact, it is his legal responsibility to de- stroy all ragweed on lands whiel he owns or Occupies. Long days of sunlight and early autumn frosts tend to create a natural barrier to the production 01 ragweed pollen. Thus it has been possible to maintain most of the resort ar- eas of Northern Ontario rela- tively free from ragweed. clay fever sufferers able to take a vacation during the peak pollen period would he well advised to consider the attractions of a Northern Ontario x acation, Pollen euneeutrations have 1cet1 studied and indexed to de- tertnine the pollit where trouble stints.. On this basis an index of over 10 is had, from 5 to 10 is 11.111 s,1le, below a is good.
