Snake
Charmers
Excepted
With the outdoor recreation
season swinging into full gear,
millions of people on vacation
or week -end holidays will sally
forth to rhe woods and fields to
enjoy nature's finest blessings.
Most of what they encounter in
the outdoors will be pleasant,
relating and even inspiring.
13ut because nature is not all
peaches and cream, they must
also be prepared to experience
some less pleasant moments.
For the average camper, hi-
ker or sportsman one of the least
enjoyable of outdoors experi-
ences is an encounter with a
poisonous snake. The poison-
ous snakes of North America

are divided into two types: pit
vipers (rattlesnakes, copper-
heads, and cottonmouths) and
coral snakes. The latter are al
concent only in the southeast-
ern states. Of all the pit vipers
the rattlesnake and the copper-
head are the most common and
widely distributed.
Avoidance of all snakes is
far more practical advice tor
the layman than trying to learn
to identify the poisonous vari-
eties. Most snakes - poison-
ous or otherwise - will go our
of their way to avoid human he-
ings if they can.
With reasonable care, ob-
serving the terrain or t r a 11
ahead, the camper, hiker or
sportsman can };card against ac-
cidental encounters with snakes.
