Chilean pianist Claud- io Arrau was named as guest on CBC's "Festival" last week, and sick feelings came upon many of us. 'Not a whole hour of that stuff', we murmurmed. Well, guest he was, and play he did, and I almost wanted to look into his piano to see where those gorgeous sounds were coming from. He played only two numbers, by Mozart and Beethoven, in that order, and even if I'm stealing a line from Guy Lombardo, it surely must have been the 'sweetest music this side of heaven', It isn't hard to see why he is world- famous for his piano gen- ius, The show was produced and filmed in Montreal a num- ber of months ago. Listening to Beethoven's music as played by Mr. Arrau, brought out an un- canny resemblance to rock-and- roll. It has been said that if the past musical greats like the 3 Bs, Mozart, and the like, could hear today's music they would turn over in their graves, but I'm not so sure. It would not have been at all impossible to jive or do a mad twist to Beethoven's music. Perhaps if Claudio Arrau were to play our modern-day music, it would get a better name. His magic touch would make any- thing sound magnificent. 0-0-0 Judy Garland finally broke the news. She had just become Mrs. Mark Herron. It is a recent picture; in fact, it is still mak- ing the theatre circuit. Rosa- lind Russell plays the title role, and you may never stop laugh- ing at her. She won an Aca- demy Award nomination for best actress in this role in 1959, but lost out to Susan Hayward in "I Want to Live". The picture itself was nominated as best picture; "Gigi" defeated it. So it didn't win; it's still one of the best comedies to curve along in a month of Sundays. Do not miss it! • say: 01*tt EL Try BLACK LABEL... and you'll know why it's Canada's Best-selling Beer!
