Kinsmen Club At Kincardine Sponsors Race
On Dominion Day, July 1,
Kincardine Kinsmen Club will
present the first half of their
21st annual harness race meet.
The Kincardine Club was
the first service club in Canada
to sponsor the sport.
Harness racing has advanced
a long way since it first started
in Kincardine 96 years ago
when the first races were ar-
ranged between the "young
bloods" of the district whosere-
putation at that time might be
likened to today's fast cars.
However, there wa's a differ-
ence and devoted horsemen
took pride in the advancement
of the breed. Unfortunately
this called for personal sacrifice
so it was not surprising thatrac-
ing as an organized sport fell on
evil days and it would appear
' for a time that harness racing .
would disappear from the Cana-

dian sports picture. A few of
the oldsters still felt the terrific
competitive spirit and enlisted
younger groups "with the legs"
to help bring about a revival,
since many race meets fell to
the responsibility of a few who,
through lack of helpers and fi-
nances, found successful race
meets an impossibility.
This happened in Kincardine
although the town had one of
the best tracks in Ontario. Kin-
cardine Kinsmen took up the
challenge which has been adopt-
ed by many western Ontario
centres and once again harness
racing became one of the great-
est annual events in the Lake
Huron town's summer program.
Secretary Elmer Thompson
reports little difficulty in secur-
ing horses to race at Kincardine
while improved pari mutual
betting booths will appeal to the
customers who set a record last
year for patronage as they en-
joyed a real day of racing on
one of Ontario's finest racks, lo-
cated on the inviting shores of
Huron, in the town "where
you're a stranger only once,"
Proceeds go for Club welfare
work.
Here's an item from an old
medical journal, quoted by the
Ontario Safety League. "If the
machine (automobile) ever at-
tains the unlikely speed of 80
miles an hour, it will have to
drive itself, for the human
brain will be incapable of con-
trolling it."

New Recreation
Folder Issued
Pancake Bay Provincial Park,
on Highway 17, 48 miles north
of Sault Ste. Marie, is denoted
by a special symbol along with
119 other parks shown on the
1964 edition of the " Roads -to -
Recreation" folder, just issued.
The folder, featured, by a
pictorial map, is published by
the Government of Ontario,
through the Department of
Highways, in co-operation with
the Departments of Tourism and
Information and Lands and For-
ests.
Special colorful symbols
pinpoint the many recreational
facilities available in Ontario.
They also show the location of
263 picnic areas, 66 parks op-
erated by Conservation Author-
ities, 81 museums and 68 his-
toric sites. Travellers can eas-
ily identify each facility for
recreation shown by its number
and listing under separate head-
ings.
The "Roads -to -Recreation"
folder is available, without
charge, from any of the 18 dis-
trict or five regional offices of
the Department of Highways
and also at the Downsview
Head Office; the Department
of Lands and Forests, either at
the Map Office, Parliament
Buildings or at 22 District Of-
fices; and from the Department
of Tourism and Information,
Parliament Buildings, or at the
Tourist Reception Centres which
it operates .
Drivers, never change lanes
without looking in your rear-
view mirror, signalling and
glancing over your shoulder to
check the "blind spot".
