Carl Stewart and sons of Listowel visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Vittie and with Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Stewart. A seven year old boy fell off the end of a wharf into 20 feet of water. Luckily, a wo- man saw him and shouted for help. A man dove in and, on his second attempt, rescued the boy who had been under the water for several minutes. Five minutes of artificial res- piration, which the man had learned from a St. John Am- bulance Save -a -Life week course saved the boy. Two Young Ladies Speak at Meeting FORDWICII-The June meet- ing of the Fordwich Women's Institute was held in the Com- munity Hall. Mrs. Robert Gib- son presided and welcomed the guests and members, who were wearing hats of former years. Devotions were taken by Mrs. Leslie Loughran, basing her remarks on the parable of the sower. The motto, "If you don't believe in co-operation just watch your wagon when one wheel comes off', was taken by Mrs. Clarence Carswell. The roll call was answered by nam- ing an old farm implement and one that replaces it, It was decided not to ask for a short course. A donation of $10. 00 was given to the Howick Agricultural Society and $5.00 for 4-11 Club work, The W.I. picnic table is to be placed on the triangular lawn in the cen- tre of the village. Miss Leslie Campbell, a pu- pil from Howick Central School, who had won the public speaking trophy, gave her talk on Racial Segregation. Miss Margaret Ann Wilson of Ford- wich, who had been awarded the 4-H tour to the United Na- tions, described her trip and showed slides. Plans were made for the July meeting to be an ice cream so- cial on the lawn of Mrs. Will- iam McCann on Tuesday, July 21, Father of Four Dies Suddenly Funeral service was held at the R. A. Currie and Sons fun- eral home on Monday afternoon for Charles Maitland Johnston of Blyth, who died suddenly at Dresden on Friday. Rev. Nleally officiated and interment was in Brandon Ce- metery. The pallbearers were Kenneth Scott, James McCal- lum, Thomas Thompson, Graeme Anderson, Ross Anderson and Arnold Bruce. The flowerbear- ers were Raymond White. and Kenneth Hopper. Mr, Johnston was born in East Wawanosh Township 43 years ago. He was the son of Mrs. Charles Johnston, the for- mer Mabel Geddes, and the late Mr, Johnston. He attend- ed S, S. No. 8 East Wawanosh and Wingham High School and served as a leading aircrafts- man in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He had been doingcon- struction work for the past six years. On December 16, 1950, he married Loretta Beauchamp of Windsor, who survives with their four children, Elizabeth, 12; Shirley Jean, 10; Nancy Darlene, 8 and Michael, 7, all of Blyth. He is also survived by his mother and a brother, Clark Johnston of Belgrave. Mr. Johnston was a member of the Anglican Church of Bel - grave and the Royal Canadian Legion. Guest Tells Group of Conditions in Ethiopia BELGRAVE-The C. G. I. T. group held the annual Mother and Daughter banquet on Thurs- day evening in the church par- lour. A delicious turkey din- ner, prepared by the girls and served by some of the ladies of the Evening Unit, was enjoyed. A toast was proposed to the Queen and God Save the Queen was sung. The toast to the church was given by Margaret Nicholson and responded to by Rev. A. Jackson; toast to the mothers by Audrey Coultes, response by Mrs. Jack Taylor. A piano solo was played by Joyce Procter and Joyce Coul- tes gave a baton drill. A vo- cal duet, "Blue Velvet", w.is sung by Rhonda Fear and Joan Bosman, accompanied by Joyce PIocter. The two graduates, Doreen Pattison and Joyce Procter were honored by their leader, :.lis. A. Jackson and presented with two silver teaspoons by Ruth Ann Pletch and Joan Bos- man. The guest speaker, Mrs. A. Jewson of Clinton, wa'. intro- duced by Joyce. Procter, Mrs. Jewson spoke on her three and a half yearst experience as a teacher in the school of [uteri - cal Arts in Ethiopia. She told of the dense population and of the number of persons who lived on the streets. Ethiopia is an Empire ruled by lieili Salassi. The houses are mud huts with thatched roofs. Their alphabet consists of over 140 letters. Airs. Jewson was a most interesting speaker and showed several articles used in Ethiopia. She was thanked by Joyce Coultes and presented with a gift by Brenda VanCamp, Edgar Families Hold Reunion GORRII!-Sixty- five descen- dants of the late Charles Edgar and his wife, Mary Anne Gray, gathered in Gorrie Community Park for their annual reunion. Mr. and Mrs. Max Bell and Mr. and `.'t Lewis Stonehouse were in charge of sports. Meeting at Lawrence Home GORRIE-The W.A. of St. Stephen's Anglican Churchheld its June .meeting at the home of Nlrs. Chas. Lawrence on Thursday afternoon. The pre- sident, Mrs. Gordon Underwood opened the meeting with a hymn and prayers. Minutes were read by Mrs. Wm. Austin. Roll call was " I low to grow old gracefully". A prayer was offered on growing older. Mrs. R. T. Bennettread a "Birthday Wish" by Edgar Guest and Mrs. Edward Newton read a poem. Selections from an article on the Eskimos by the Rt. Don- ald B. Marsh, Bishop of the Arctic, were read by Mrs. Har- ry Jennings, Mrs. C. Lawrence and Mrs. G. A. Anderson. Mrs. Norman Wade reported on the Workshop held at Huron College May 29 - 31, Mrs, Anderson closed the meeting with prayer. No meetings will be held un- til September. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Family Gathering At Brydges Home A family gathering was held Sunday at the home of Mr, and Mrs. harry Brydges on Diagonal Road, when over 40 relatives attended, Outdoor games were played and lunch was served on the lawn, Out of town guests were Mr, and Mrs, Mel Bradburn of Bel - grave, Miss Myrtle Johnson, Murray Bradburn and his son Kevin, Mr. and Mrs, Tom Brydges all of London, Mr. and Mrs, 13111 Johnson and family of Lucknow, Mr, and Mrs. Jack Adair and family of Nlolesworth, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Downie and family of Penetang, Mr, and Mrs. Bight Rousselle of Scar- borough, and Mr, and Mrs. Wallace Ballagh and family of Tceswater..
