gleaming relics of the ice age,
cascading rivers, multi -color-
ed lakes, glittering snowpeaks
and fascinating canyon forma-
tions rank the Rockies and Jas-
per at the top of vacation
"places to go". Jasper alone
has 4200 square miles of
towering mountain ranges and
wide, lake -spangled valleys,
It is both a wilderness region
and a modern resort, and
boasts a history which provides
entrancing chapters of western
Canada's early story when
venturesome fur traders, mis-
sionaries and explorers pushed
throagh its passes to the Paci-
`ie' coast. Today's fortunate
travellers to Jasper reap the
benefit. There remain the
1::sh forests, the wandering,
herds of big game, the mighty
rivers, the 'lowered alplands,
together witii all the amenities
of modern living, good trans-
portation, con;:ortable accom-
modation. and facilities for
a creation and respite from
workaday routine.
In summer the visitor roJa<-
per may sightsee from his car
by motoring o\er black -topped
main highways and beckoning
sideroads. Or he may ride or
hike along captivating forest
trails; swim in hot springs pools,
climb among high, serrated
peaks; golf on one of North
America's finest courses; and
try his luck at angling along
Jasper's streams and among the
many lakes, In Winter it's
mainly skiing, curling and
skating. The selection of ac-
commodation is varied and
complete, everything from
wilderness camping to the lux-
uries of finest motels and ho-
tels in the Rockies.
Trail Riding
And Hunting
Trail trips in the inspiring
hack country of the Rockies be-
came more popular with visi-
tors every year, More and more
vacationists with eyes open for
something different in holidays
are discovering the thrill and
content of days in the saddle,
and of peaceful tamps among
the pines when night falls.
Some rides are delightful day
trips which take the riders to
the summit of nearby Whistlers
Mountain or along the well -
kept trails of the valley. Oth-
ers can be week -t nd rides to
nearby, yet isolated lakes like
those in the lovely Valley of
The Five. And every year
finds many wise outdoorsmen
and their families devoting en-
tire holiday time to a saddle
trip deep into the remote won-
derland of the Rockies. Jasper
has several local saddle barns
for day rides, and also licensed
pack outfitters who specialize
the trips farther afield.
While the hunting of big game
is not permitted within the
borders of any National Park,
Jasper is headquarters and
jumping-off point for hunting
trips into the vast areas beyond
the park preserves.
Boats for Rent
Canoes and boats may be
rented for use on several of the
beautiful mountain lakes in
the Jasper Valley. If you trail
your own craft you are that
much more fortunate. Jasper is
also the starting point for long
canoe trips down the northbound
Athabasca River, waters of
which eventually join those of
the Mackenzie River and flow
into the Arctic Ocean.
Scenic Drives a Delight
Jasper's two main Park high-
ways provide unexcelled mo-
toring pleasure through some of
the most spectacular scenery in
the world. Probably no motor
trip anywhere contains so much
variety in mountain viewpoints
as the Jasper -Banff highway
which follows the historic Ath-
abasca and Sunwapta Rivers
from Jasper to Columbia Ice -
field for its first 65 miles. It
joins the Trans -Canada High-
way north of Lake Louise, less
than 75 miles from Jasper Park
boundary, then continues anoth-
er 35 miles to Banff, skirting
the glacial -fed Bow River. The
other trunk highway, from Jas-
per to the East Gate route to-
ward Edmonton, makes a par-
ticularly fine evening drive
when the lakes are still, reflec-
tions are superb, and many an
animals likely to be seen. At
Pocahontas, a good branch road
leads off to Miette Hot Springs.
Other popular drives in the vi-
cinity of Jasper fan out to
Mount Edith Cavell and Atha-
baska Falls; Lac Beauvert, the
Fish Hatchery, and Maligne
Canyon; Pyramid Lake; over
the Yellowhead Pass to Mount
Robson, the highest of Canadi-
an Rockies peaks; and to the
Whistlers ski chalet.
While all these drives may
be enjoyed from your own car,
local transportation companies
have the latest in sight-seeing
buses and `tour cars which oper-
ate on schedule every day of
the summer season. Most short-
er trips like the local general
drive, the Miette Hot Springs,
and the one to snowclad Mount
Edith Cavell and Glacier of the
Angel, may be taken either
morning or afternoon. The
drive to Columbia Icefield re-
quires a full day and permits
time for the unique snowmobile
ride over the age- old ice of
Athabasca Glacier, an experi-
ence which often becomes the
highlight of the visitor's holi-
day.

Jasper Offers
Winter Holiday
Jasper Park is now occupy-
ing an enviable position among
winter resorts of western Cana-
da. The long and varied slopes
of the Whistlers development
couple with excellent lifts and
the Chalet to attract hundreds
of visiting skiers each winter.
Thrilling powder snow ski-
ing in the high country of
Mormot Basin, Maligne Lake a
and the Tonquin Valley brings
spring skiers to Jasper long
after the snow has disappeared
from the lower rims, There is
summer skiing, too, in the
Columbia Icefield area where
year-round snow blankets the
upper glacial slopes. .Jasper's
winter activity is not limited
to skiing. The resort also
plays host to many visiting
curlers each winter. Outside
rinks compete in events of
the annual bonspiel, a week of
"roarin" fun on sheets of arti-
ficial ice. Skiing and curling
events always coincide with a
gay ice and skating carnival,
staged in the new Jasper Aren' ,
for a special mid -winter spoi is
week. -
Camping
Conscious of the trend to-
ward family camping, the Na-
tional Parks administration has
established well-equipped
camp -grounds throughout the
Canadian Rockies. Jasper has
several of these, the largest
of which is the Cottonwood
Camp near the rownsite where
trailers and tent campers are
accommodated and where the
there is electricity, running
water, showers, and central
kitchens. Outlying camp-
grounds are smaller and are of-
ten preferred by those who wish I lands and beside the friendly
to "get away" into the forest- waters of a mountain stream.
