Make Sure If's a Good One
Over the first holiday week-
end of the boating season thou-
sands of oottages were opened
up for the first time all over
Ontario. Plans are being made
for a summer of relaxation and
enjoyment on our wonderful
waterways. Only the right ap-
proach to the use of boats, mo-
tors and water s.<is will insure a
summer of fun and pleasure un-
marred by tragedy.
The first step is to inspect
the hull of your boat thorough-
ly and be sure it is in seaworthy
condition, and if not, Una;<e the
necessary repairs before putting
it in the water. Then checi<
over your motor and all safety
equipment, making necessary
repairs and replacements.
Remember that the law re-
quires a pair of oars or paddles,
a bailing bucket or bilge pump
and a government approved
lifejacket or lifesaving cushion
for each passenger in the aver-
age outboard powered boat. And

An adequate tool kit and
spare sheer plus can save you
lost time and embarrassment.
If you are operating your boat
at night it is important that nav-
igation lights are in good con-
dition and bunting, red and
green lights in the how and a
white light showing all around
the horizon on the stern.
The second step in insuring
your pleasure and enjoyment
for the summer is to know the
Rules -of -the -Road and Rights -
of -Way and practise them. This
knowledge combined with com-
mon sense and courtesy on the
water will make for a boating
season of fun and safety.
Air Dry -Cleaned
Sleeping Bags
With the approach of anoth-
er camping season, campers
are readying their equipment,
investigating new equipment
and gazing longingly ahead for
the holiday week -ends. Most
will be safety conscious. They
will be aware of boating and
swimming dangers and yet
there will be accidents. They
will be aware of highway dan-
gers and yet there will be tra-
gedies.
One danger, however, will
not be an obvious one. It will
remain unseen until it happens.
It will be in the least obvious
place for danger. It will be in
a sleeping bag. Many campers
have their sleeping bags dry
cleaned as a regular yearly
practice. Last year this proved
fatal to .a camper. The clean-
ing fluid had been tested and
for years this practice has been
followed with safety. The bag
was not aired before use, how-
ever, and a camper died. The
fumes from the unventilated
bag, along with some unknown
association of conditions, cre-
ated a situation which may
never he duplicated. Campers
are cautioned, therefore, to
play safe and air dry-cleaned
bags bL :ere use.
