The producers of 'Pa ade' fi-
nally gave Betty Robertson her
own half-hour in the series, last
Thursday evening. Last season,
when Rosemary Clooney took
suddenly ill, Betty substituted
for her and carried the show
well. This time she did even
better and since Canada is ser-
iously lacking in variety tele-
vision shows I think it would be
wonderful to see Betty hostess
of her own show, as long as
they aren't intending to give
Shirley Harmer one of her own

the air at the end of this sea-
son, which is unfortunate, It
has long been our best variety
series and a good showcase for
some top American stars and
some upcoming Canadian tal-
ent. There will be an hour-
long variety series aired on
Monday evenings in this sea-
son's 'Playdate' time slot, next
year on CBC. It will be called
"Show of The Week" but only
eight of its segments will be
variety shows, so it can't really
be considered a replacement for
'Parade'. 'Parade' won't com-
pletely die out, though; it has
been sold to NBC-TV and some
of its episodes will be televised
as summer replacements for
"That Was the Week That Was"
(Fridays at 9:30 on American
channels).

There is a select group of
performers in Hollywood who
keep the film capital on the
map by constantly showing up
on the front pages of the news-
papers. Among them are Liz
Taylor, Jayne Mansfield, Frank
Sinatra, and Judy Garland,
Whether they like it or not,
they make the headlines, if
they even so much as sneeze!
Sinatra, for instance, recently
was taking a day off from mo-
vie -making in Hawaii, and de-
cided to go for a swim. An
unruly wave almost swept him
out to sea, but he was rescued,
though forced to rest for a few
days before going back to work
directing "None But the Brave".
Naturally, world newspapers
carried the story on front pages.
Judy Garland's recent trek onto
the front pages was even more
unfortunate. She was admitted
to a Hong Kong hospital in cri-
tical condition, suffering from
what some called 'a heart at-
tack', and others tagged 'amy-
sterious illness'. Still others,
who know that suicide -prone
star, formed their own opin-
ions. During her ten -hour-long
coma her pulse actually stopped
for awhile, Earlier, in Mel-
bourne, Australia, she had per-
formed some deeds, both off-
stage and on, that greatly dis-

pleased her fans. She arrived
on stage an hour late, took a
much longer intermission than
usual, and when she did sing it
was incoherent and discordant,
a far cry from the old Garland
style. She left Australia look-
ing terrible, with an equally
foul disposition, but since her
stay in hospital followed soon
after we can blame this on ill
health. Her condition, now
having developed into pleurisy,
is much improved and by the
time you read this she may have
already left hospital and return-
ed home. Miss Garland is per-
haps the strongest evidence
that 'a star's lot is not a happy
one'. With her talent bringing
her success, fame, and wealth,
and a new high standard to
Hollywood entertainment,
Hollywood in return has brought
her nothing but misery, mental
anguish, and .heartbreak,

SOME VACATION AREAS
ARE IDEAL FOR THOSE
WHO GET HAY FEVER
Anyone suffering from one
of the "hay fever" type of al-
lergies should try to avoid the
localities where there is much
ragweed or other air -borne pol-
lens. A vacation can be spoil-
ed by attacks of this ailment.
There are areas in Canada
that are quite free or almost
free of the ragweed, where the
sufferer may look forward to re-
lief from his trouble, Much re-
search has been done by federal
and provincial departments on
ragweed incidence in various
parts of Canada and the infor-
mation is available in a free
service, upon request to the

Bureau, Ottawa, Canada.

the unhappiness and tenseness

within the last few months, dur-

gat, separated and agreed on a
divorce. From all evidence,
Abbe is going to come out on
the long end of one of the
largest settlements ever, as Cu-
gie apparently is a very rich
man, In addition, she also has
been granted custody of their
New York penthouse and their
two chihuahuas. Cugie, 64,
married Abbe, who is 34, in
1952. He put her up front in
his band and made her a star.
Unlike other musical husband -
and -wife teams, though, these
two don't need each other to be
successful, but it will take time
to become accustomed to see-
ing each of there alone,
