Dad Deserves Top Honors on June 21 Father's Day 1904 occurs, appropriately enough, on June 21, the summer solstice and the longest day of the year. It can also be the happiest day of the year for our Dads and Granddads if they are appropriately honored by their sons and daughters, grand sons and granddaughters. According to the Father's Day Council, the official slogan of this year's Father's Day will be, "Thanks, Dad - Granddad, Too." Although at first glance, that phrase may seem terse and trite, what else can be said to these men who have labored so long and hard,sacrificed so much and devoted their thoughts and hours to the maintenance and betterment of their families? Especially in this Olympic year, youngsters have theircur- rent heroes -- athletes who are justly honored for triumphs they have worked hard and trained conscientiously to achieve. Dad's and Granddad's victories, though they may seem less spectacular, are none the less great and, in the long run, far more important to the life and success of our country. No medals or laurel wreaths are presented to American fath- ers for providing good homes for their children, for clothing them better than any others, for giving them increasingly won- derful educational opportunities, for devoting their leisure hours to their children's companion- ship, for guiding them in the paths of good faith, good citi- zenship and self-reliance. THEY'RE REWARDED Most Dads consider them- selves sufficiently rewarded for their unstinting efforts when they see their children healthy, happy and growing up to and achieving a useful and whole- some adult life of their own. The theme of Father's Day, "Juvenile Integrity Starts in the Home," indicates the responsi- bility of Dads and Granddads to insulate their children with the highest standards of ethics and deportment. Few, of course, hold formal seminars with their boys and girls to discuss these niatters. Most, however, employ a more subtle, less self-conscious and more effective way of impart- ing those ideals. They set the examples by their oconUuct, words and deeds. EXPRESS GRATITUDE While we can't honor our Dads and Granddads with med- als, cheers and anthems, we can express our gratitude, es- pecially on "His Day" of the year -- not only with a Thanks Dad!" -- but also with some concrete tokens of our ap- preciation, Honor Dad on Father's Day with a dinner of the official menu of soup, chicken, cran- berry sauce, ice cream, cat<e and the trimmings, Pile his place with gifts that will not on• ly bring him joy but which will make him proud, Wear a rose (the official flower) on Father's Day -- a red rose for the living, a white rose for the departed. Show your Dad and Grand- dad that he's your champion, your hero. • Father's Day is in view, and the focus is on handsome, practical gifts for Dad (Granddad, too!) from the admiring family. The youngest family members will give special thought to Father's gifts, and they'll have a wide array to choose from, for stores are thinking of him too, and can help with the big decision. Father's Day Humor In Greeting Cards "I'm so glad you're my fa- ther....you'd make a ridicu- lous looking mother!" That is the sentiment on one of this year's Father's Day cards Of all the greeting card days of the year, Father's Day is the one which takes the crown for humor. Perhaps it is more dif- ficult to tell pop how you feel about him than to express your- self to mother. Cards. for Moth- er's Day are definitely sentim- ental, but for Father's Day hu- mor is the king, though the love and sentiment are there, between the lines. Another card that some lucky Dad will receive thisFa- ther's Day is a special Father's Day fishing license giving pop license (a) to fish and as a spe- cial bonus (b) to tell fish stor- ies. Father's Day cards are not just for fathers. There are cards for fathers of friends, grandfathers, uncles and many others. Several cards have been designed for a wife to send to her husband on Father's Day and again humor predominates, as in the card which tells the re- cipient he is "charming, witty, good looking and has good taste You chose tne!" Most cards highlight mascu- line sports and activities like golf, bowling, fishing or loaf- ing. Many use a masculine wearing apparel, like a red and yellow striped vest, as basic de- sign. Gift wrap papers for Father's Day presents are as masculine as the aroma of pipe tobacco. One design uses a pipe, key case and other masculine acces- sories on a background that looks like burlap. Another pa- per has the word "Mr." in- scribed on it, Browns are the most predominant shade and bronze, brown or whit e sheen ribbon is advised for trim. Humor is used in a contem- porary design paper called "Mi- ser's Delight". Written on the paper are such slogans as "Re- member, It's the Thought that Counts", and, "Just a little something I picked up on sale . These seem to be ideal wraps to enclose those special Father's BOUND TO SUCCEED One way to get around Dad on Father's Day is with a new dress or sports belt. Dressy leathers and reptile skins and casual fabrics and webbings come in many good look- ing styles to round out Dad's busi- ness and casual outfits.
