Amid much trouble and hul-
labaloo, the Emmy Awards
were presented on NBC on Mon-
day evening of last weE:it. The
presentation of televi,don awards
was boycotted by both other ma-
jor U. S. networks, A13C and
CBS, but they allowed their
stars to appear, either to ac-
cept awards or present them. It
was at first feared that only the
NBC stars would be showing up
for the gala event, but many
others who work on the other
networks jammed the two loca-
tions in New York and Holly-
wood, and participated in the
proceedings. The networks had
claimed that voting for the Em-
my Awards was unfair. One of
the reasons for the dispute was
the fact that no news shows
have had a chance in the Em-
my race for six year•, the per-
iod of time that Chet Huntley
and David Brinkley have been
walking off with the coveted
statues, for their excellent
news reports on NBC. Both net-
works, however, won their
share of honours in other news
shows.
Joey Bishop who stars in his
own series, and E. G. Marshall,
the 'Lawrence Preston' on CBS
"The Defenders" were the re-
spective hosts in Holly'd and
New York. Best actress in a
series was Mary Tyler Moore, of
"The Dick Van Dyke Show".
She defeated Patty Duke, Shir-
ley Booth (Hazel), Irene Ryan
"Beverley Hillbillies"), and
Inger Stevens of "Farmer's
Daughter". Her co-star, Dick
Van Dyke, took the male award
for a series, defeating, among
others, Dean Jagger of "Mr.
Novak", Richard Boone of his
own show, and George C. Scott
of "East Side, West Side . The

Dick Van Dyke Show, which is
almost impossible to better, al-
so won for best comedy series,
best comedy direction, and
best comedy writing.
Best actress in one particular
production was Shelley Winters,
better known for her wor,< in
movies, who won for a segment
on The Sob Hope ChryslerThe-
atre. Her counterpart among
the actors was Jack Klugman
who won for his role in 'Black-
list' on "The Defenders" last
season, Among the performers
he defeated was Roddy McDow-
all, whom I would have liked
to see win, Jason Robards Jr. ,
and Harold J. Stone. Taking
honours for best dramatic series
was one that we CBC followers
see every wee,<, "The Defen-
ders", which originates with
CBS at New York. It defeated
Bob Hope's Chrysler Theatre,
"East Side, West Side" ," Mr.
Novak", and The Richard Boone
Show.
The Bell Telephone Hour
won as best musical series and
Danny Kaye took all honours in
the variety class, defeating
such greats as Judy Garland,
Barbara Streisand, and Andy
Williams to take the award for
outstanding performance, and
his show topping The Tonight
Show with Johny Carson, and
the Andy Williams, Judy Gar-
land, and Garry Moore Shows.
Danny will be sharing his ma-
gical talent with us next year;
his CBS -originated show will be
taking the place of Garry
Moore, and will be seen in this
year's 'Ben Casey' time slot on
Tuesday nights. (Bundle of
laughs Ben is packing up his in-
struments and moving to Fri-
day evening.)
"The Making of The Presi-
dent" on ABC won an Emmy
for being the best documentary
and also won as the outstanding
show of the year, and for best
original music, which was com-
posed by Elmer Bernstein. The
director of "East Side, West
Side" won for best dramatic di-
rection. Rod Serling, origina-
tor of the old "Twilight Zone"
won as best dramatic writer,
adapting a play from some oth-
er work, for a segment of Bob
Hope's Chrysler Theatre, and
Ernest Knoy, author of'Black-
list' on "The Defenders" was
named best original drama wri-
ter. Top variety director was
Robert Sheerer of "The Danny
Kaye Show".
Them's the top winners, and
although I can't really agree
with ABC's and CBS' beef, it
must be admitted that there is
not much variety in the win-
ners. And in case you're inter-
ested, the Grammy Awards
were recently announced in
New York. These are the hon-
ors given to recording stars by
the Recording Arts and Scien-
ces. Henry (Hank) Mancini,
not surprisingly, walkedaway
with his share of awards, also
his collaborator, Johny Mercer
(remember" Moon River",
"Days of Wine and Roses", and
"Charade"?). And top vocal-
ist, and again no wonder, was
Barbara Streisand. She is the
most talented young gal to
come along in many a moon;
there is nothing that she cannot
do, and do well. While we're
on the subject, isn't her rendi-
tion of "People" the most fan-
tastic sound since music was in
vented? She is starring now on
Broadway in Fanny Brice'slife
story, "Funny Girl", and if
you're looking for a priceless
record album to add to your
collection, that sound track is
it. It may be even mote to
your liking than the music from
this year's smash, "Hello, Dol-
ly". Another sound -track al-
bum which you should own is
