met in Wingham homes and
played duplicate many ever-
nings during the cold winter
months.
Enjoyable as those parties
were, they did maiKe a lot of
work for the ladies as the games
were usually preceded by sump-
tuous full -course dinners. Some
will remember these gala af-
fairs with nostalgia and regret
that they were not continued.
Many bridge players here will
remember one bridge -party
dinner where indi',idual roast
pheasants were served to each
of the 40 guests!
Four present members of the
Wingham Bridge Club will re-
call too, a delightful bridge -
luncheon held in Wingham back
in the twenties when 16 ladies
sat down to a table spread with
an exquisitely embroidered ma-
deira banquet cloth upon which
were priceless Dresden cande-
labra and centrepiece of Dres-
den cupids holding fragrant
tea roses and forget-me-nots!
Each setting was a Royal Crown
Derby and sterling and for many
present it was their first intro-
duction to crystal finger -bowls
and bridge!
It is hard to say whether the
ladies tired first of preparing
such elaborate dinners and
serving them in long, trailing
dinner gowns of chiffon, satin,
velvet or lace, or whether the
men wearied first and rebelled
at struggling into starched
shirts and tuxedo jackets once
or twice every week: With
considerable foresight, Mr.
French suggested that duplicate
bridge games be held in a rent-
ed place -- and so the Wing -
ham Bridge Club was formed
and for the first several years
played in the Masonic Hall.
Those who liked congenial-
ity, social amenities and fine
food and some who played
bridge only when a gun or at
least a clenched fist was aimed
at their ribs, dropped out.
Those fascinated by duplicate
attended regularly, sitting un-
complainingly on hard un-
cushioned chairs and playing
across bare, varnished tables
"garnished" only with tin ash
trays!
The first game of the Wing -
ham Duplicate Bridge Club was
held in the Masonic Hall the
first week of October, 1936. At
this meeting Mr. French was
elected president and George
Mason appointed secretary.
The winners of the firsteve-
ning's play were: North and
South: Mrs. Murray Johnson
and Dr. A. R. Du Val. East
and West: Mrs. C. Kingan and
George Mason. During the

BRIDGE WINNERS—The Wingham Bridge
Club held its last session of the season at
the fire hall last Wednesday and the sea-
son's winners were presented with troph-
ies. Taking top honours this year were:
Centre, William Wharry, of Lucknow, and
Mrs. Harvey Fisher, Wingham, who were
presented with the trophies by last year's
winners, Bill Laidlaw, left, and Mrs. Donald
Nasmith, right. The small keeper trophies
held by the winners were donated by
Charles Hodgins and W. H. French. Mrs.
Reg. DuVal and Mrs. F. Forgie were tied
for second place in the ladies' division and
Harley Crawford and W. H. French were
second and third in the men's section.
first season, games were played
twice monthly and the average
attendance was thirty. (61 ta-
bles.)
In January 1938, two beau-
tiful trophies were donated to
the Club. The ladies'trophy
was given by H. C. Hodgson
and the men's trophy was do-
nated by W. H. French. The
first winners of these beautiful
trophies were Mrs. R. S. Heth-
erington and Harley Crawford.
Each season since then,
play-offs in May have been
held to decide the club cham-
pions. These play-off games
are eagerly loo:(ed forward to
and always keenly contested.
Saturday is conceded to be
Hockey Night across Canada
but from OCto, er to May,
Thursday night is bridge night
in Wingham.
INTER -CLUB COMPETITION
In 1939 the first inter -club
match between Wingham and
Goderich clubs was held and
return matches between these
clubs have been held -Tactic-
ally every year since wen.
Challenge games occasionally
are played between Wingham,
Mitchell and Stratford.
Mr. French and Mrs. Craw-
ford have played in open pairs
thatches held in Toronto and
have placed very high in these
and both of these Wingham
members have earned an envi-
ous number of Master bridge
points.
Many old friends are missed
from the Club and many new
members have joined and been
made sincerely welcome.
All members were pleased
that this year two of the newer
members, Mrs. Harvey Fisher
of Wingham and William
Wharry of Lucknow were the
trophy winners, and are now
the reigning club champions.
It is hoped their success will
encourage others interested in
bridge to join and enjoy the
keen games which will he play•
ed again next season in the
Firemen's Recreation Room at
the Fire Hall beginning in Oc-
tober. The membership fee is
only $1.50 with an attendance
charge of 25¢ for each evening
of play.
The members of the Wing -
ham bridge club will not al-
ways agree as to how a hand
of bridge should be bid or play-
ed but they will all agree that
from October to May, Thursday
evening is the one they look
forward to most each week.
Over the years many mem-
bers have worked hard for the
success of the club. The pre-
sent chairman of the tourna-
ment committee, Charles Hod•
gins is to be congratulated on
the successful competitions of
this season and he and all
