April 23, 1564, Stratford -
On -Avon, England - William
Shakespeare was born to John
and Mary Shakespeare. His
father was a prosperous citizen
of Stratford; his mother a far-
• mer's daughter from near Strat-
ford. William attended school
in Stratford, and at 18 married
Anne Hathaway, who waseight
years his senior. In 1590, ha-
ving moved to London and
working with London Theatres,
• he wrote his first play. During
the next 20 years he produced
many plays. In about 1610 he
left London and returned to his
home town, planning to live
there in retirement, but a few
years later, in April of 1616,
▪ he died at the age of 52.
Shakespeare's plays ate no
doubt the best known in the
world, even today, 400 years
after his birth. Among his
most popular are "Romeo and
Juliet, "Love's Labour's Lost",
"A Midsummer Night's Dream",
• "The Merchant of Venice",
"As You Like It", "Julius Cae-
sar" "Hamlet; , "Othello",
"King Lear", "MacBeth",
"Antony and Cleopatra", and
"Twelfth Night". There are
• of course, many lesser known
works in his total of 36.
Celebrations are being held
throughout the world this month
to commemorate his 400th
birthday. Here in Canada,
CBC -Television is doing its
part in keeping his memory
alive. Highlights of the pro-
ductions have been the presen-
tation of " Twelfth Night" star-
ring our own Canadian actors
and actresses; a BBC production
of "Hamlet" starring Christo-
• pher Plummer; and last week's
repeat of Verki's opera "Oth-
ello".
Festival's "Twelfth Night",
produced and directed by
George McCowan, was written
by Shakespeare in 1601. It is
• a comedy with many funny sit-
uations and strange mixups.
The Canadian performers who

speare at Stratford, were excel
lent in their roles. Douglas
Rain as Malvolio, Douglas
Campbell as Sir Toby Belch,
and Martha Henry as Viola,
were especially impressive.
Michael Learned was no more
than adequate as Olivia, and
Deborah Turnbull spoke much
too quickly in her role as Mar-
ia, the maid. Many of her
words were not even under-
standable, thanks either to her
manner of speech or that end-
less giggling that accompanied
her appearances. Young actor
Gordon Pinsent as Viola's bro-
ther Sebastian, showed a great
deal of promise and the resem-
blance between the two was
striking. The climatic scene
in which they recognize each
other was skilfully handled by
McCowan, and was definitely
the highlight of the production.
A week later, on the same
show, a three-hour production
of "Hamlet" was shown as part
of Shakespeare's birthday cele-
brations. This was the special
presentation made by the Bri-
tish Broadcasting Corporation in
co-operation with Danish Tele-
vision Services. It was filmed
at Kronburg Castle at Elsinore
in Denmark, the actual setting
for the tragedy. It was a mag-
nificent three hours of enter-
tainment, but most of all, it
once again proved that we
should all be very proud of our
native son, Christopher Plum-
mer who played the title role,
the same role he played at our
Stratford in 1957. Though he is
growing older, he is still per-
fect as the young nephew of
the King of Denmark. His per-
formance was natural, yet sen-
sitive and exciting. His pre-
tence of madness in the scene
with Polonius, his scene with
Ophelia in the Castle, the con-
versation with his father's ghost
aroused the viewer's humour,
yet also his sympathy and under-
standing, as no other performer
could have. Scenery in the cas-
tle and in the Danish country-

side was breathtaking and added
much to the show's beauty. Mr.
Plummer's supporting players
also deserve credit for their ef-
forts. Robert Shaw as the King,
June Tobin as the Queen, Jo
Maxwell Muller as Ophelia, and
Michael Caine as Iloratid, were
especially good. Canada had
the good fortune to be the first
to see this presentation which
was filmed in Denmark last
year at a cost of $120, 000.
Some who do not try to under-
stand Shakespeare may have
considered the evening a waste
of time. As far as many of us
are concerned, however, it
was a masterpiece -an excel-
lent tribute to the talented
bard.
While CBC was showing a
tribute to Shakespeare's mem-
ory, our Canadian players were
receiving rave notices in Chi-
chester, England, in part of
that country's celebrations. The
Canadian cast, which included
Eric House, Frances Hyland,
Diana Maddox, Douglas Rain,
John Colicos, William Hutt,
Martha Henry, and many oth-
ers, opened in the southern
town on April 6th and have re-
ceived nothing but praise for
all their performances. Their
