Bi-culturalistn is a widely
diseussed subject and Farm Va-
cations Inc. feels it is very im-
portant between city and
country. The farm is the basis
of living. Destroy the farms
and the cities die with thein.
Farm Vacations Inc, lists
farms, ranches and lodges
from coast to coast. Two young
:nen from Australia arc plan-
ning a tour of United States and
Canada and have booked at
various farm homes along their
planned route. They start their
tour in August 1964. Farm Va-
cations Inc. puts outa directory
of recommended homes in the
States and Canada. There is
a brochure of Canadian homes
also.
Most farms today have mo-
dern conveniences --all the best
of city home comfort in a coun-
try setting. Many fine large
country homes would be ideal
places for a farm vacation.
The host and hostess find
new friends among their visi-
tors. City people find that
farmers are not all the "cousin
Clem" type but are country bu-
siness men, very well informed
regarding current events world-
wide and local.
A vacation on the farm
means that it is not necessary
to load and crowd the car with
tent, bedding and food. Just
choose the farm that appeals to
you from the brochure.
You may choose a farm near
a lake. Many hostesses pack
picnic meals which makes it
easy to take the family and a
picnic dinner to the lake and
return home in the evening to
a cool, airy farmhouse and all
the comforts of home.
Spending your holiday on a
farm is a great was to get the
most for your vacation dollar.
Fees include a good clean room
with meals prepared by the na-
tion's top farm cooks. Snacks
and tea or coffee and picnic
lunches are available all the
time. You are invited to share
the farmer's home. Hospitality
at its best is yours for the ask-
ing.

Which Is Best
Hog Building?
Which is the best type of
swine building for your farm?
Agricultural engineers, reports
the Meat Packers Council of Ca
Canada, are continually de,
signing new buildings for hous-
ing livestock and comparing
them under various conditions
to find out which ones are the
most economical.
Animal scientists at Purdue
University recently built four
different kinds of hog barns: (1)
an open front pole barn with a
paved exercise and feeding yard
outside,(2) a steel framebuild-
ing with a concrete floor, (3)
a steel frame building with a
completely slatted floor, and
(4) a steel frame building con-
sisting of long narrow pens with
the rear portion beim slatted.
The experiment showed that
the 4th set-up, a steel building
with long narrow pens and par-
tially slatted floors, was the
cheapest unit for raising hogs.
While further tests are .being
run, preliminary results indi-
cated that the long pen arrange•
ment required much less labour
to look after the hogs. The
costs of feed and bedding were
much lower than any of theoth-
er buildings and the combina
tion of long narrow pens with
partially slatted floors at the
rear, lowered hog production
costs considerably, even though
the open front pole barn type of
building was the cheapest to
build initially.
Livestock buildings which
save labour can often be justi-
fied even if they do cost mare

Crab -grass Easy to Control
Crab -grass causes more an-
noyance than almost any other
weed. It comes in two sizes,
large and hairy, and small and
smooth. The small variety is
most common in Ontario gar-
dens and lawns. Large or small,
it is a real problem when it in-
fests lawns, gardens or crops.
Crab -grass seed does notger-
minate and start growing intil
the soil warms up. It continues
to forge ahead under dry hot
Meeting Held at
Mitchell Home
A meeting of The Canadian
Farm Vacation Association was
held recently at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fawcett
near Mitchell. Miss Patricia
Dickerman, executive director
of New York, flew in and was
guest speaker. Miss Elia Kinnie
of Toronto, who is associated
with the Wm. P. Wolf Organi-
zation and is also the Canadian
repres entative, attended.
A sumptuous dinner was
served and among those seated
at the head table were, Warden
David q. White of Perth County
Reeve Wilfred Seebach and
Mrs. Seebach, Arnold Kuhl,
who is president, and Mrs. Kuhl
of Owen Sound, Mr. Campbell
of Mitchell and Mr. and Mrs.
James Beirnes of Preston, Mrs.
Beirnes is secretary of the Asso-
ciation, Members were present
from Manitoulin Island, Peter-
boro, Williamsford, Allenford,
Whitechurch, Wroxeter and
other places in Ontario.
Miss Dickerman gave an ac-
count of the work of the Asso-
ciation in an interesting and
witty manner, stressing the
point that it is a means of un-
derstanding between city and
country. Warden White made
a speech stating that Perth
County is the home of the
Shakespearean Festival and vi-
sitors could attend the Festival
and visit at the farms at the
same time. Reeve Seebach
spoke in a similar vein and the
warden showed a keen interest
and offered to help in various
ways. The meeting was thrown
open for discussion and it was
decided to hold the nextmeet-
ing in the fall at Williamsford.

initially, because they allow
one man to handle a larger vo-
lume of hogs. However, unless
the labour saved allows the
farm operator to either cut
down on his hired help or in-
crease the number of hogs
raised without increasing his la-
bour, then his profits will like-
ly show little improvement.
conditions when most o:her
plants are slowed down. This
annual grass weed is more com-
mon on lighter soils, says the
Soils and Crops Branch, Ontario
Department of Agriculture.
Crab -grass seedlings can be
recognized by the short broad
leaves of a yellow greenish
shade. The fully grown plant
may reach three feet in length
though one foot is more com-
mon. At this stage the plant
often turns a purple shade and in
August the fingerlike seed stems
(4 or more in number) spread
out from the end of the stem.
Control of this weed any-
where is partially dependent on
smothering it out. In lawns
high fertility and close clipping
crowd it out and prevent seed
formation. In a corn crop, at-
razine effectively controls most
crab -grass. In grain crops early
harvest cultivation will prevent
crab -grass going to seed.
For lawn protection several
chemical weed killers are avail-
able. Dacthal or Zytron can be
used for spring treatments. An-
other effective treatment is
trifluralin. This can be mixed
with fertilizer and spread over
the lawn. In the summer,phen-
yl mercuric compounds orpotas-
sium cyanate give good results.
All of these herbicides should be
used exactly as recommended
by the manufacturer, In gar-
dens, the hoe or hand pulling is
still the only practical method
of control.
The Ontario Department
prints a "Guide to Chemical
Weed Control" (publication 75).
This is revised annually. So for
