Girls Occupational Course
The Girl's Occupational
course is designed to give stu-
dents who cannot complete a
full high school course, an in-
sight into various trades, The
principal aim in introducing the
course is to familiarize pupils
with the materials, processes
and skills, required in trades in
which they may be interested.
There is no intention that
the completion of a familiari-
zation course should constitute
even a partial qualification of
a pupil to enter a designated
trade. It should be pointed
• out that a pupil intending to be-
come an apprentice in a desi-
gnated trade must comply with
the requirements of that trade.
A primary purpose of the
programme is to provide suit-
able education and training
which will assist the pupils in
becoming useful citizens of the
community. An attempt is
made to interest the pupils in
education and to get them to
appreciate the ever increasing
necessity for obtaining a good
• educational background.
In Wingham District High
School a survey course of
grooming, hospital services,
power sewing, restaurant ser-
vices and merchandising is
taught.
r The aim in teaching home-
making is to enable the girls to
step into a home and take over
if the mother has to go to the
hospital; to stay and assist her
when she returns home until she
feels well enough to resume her
tasks. Of course, another type
of job a student may obtain
from this training is that of a
mother's help.
In restaurant service we
try to teach the girls the dif-
ferences between counter and
• table waiting. We also give
them an insight of a short or-
der cook's job.

THE FINE ARTS of home economics are being taught in
the girls' occupational course as demonstrated by these
two young ladies icing a cake. Left is Sylvia Holloway,
of Wingham, and right, Joan Garness, of Brussels, -A -T
Photo.
The power or gear -drive
sewing machines enable the
girls to learn how to control
and operate factory machines.
This will, we hope open the
way to jobs in industry where
this equipment is used.
We are fortunate enough to
have a cash register in the
room. This gives the girls a
chance to try their hand at
clerking. Actually, there is
a complete small store and all
facets of clerking such as dis-
play work, serving customers,
being a cashier and accepting
telephone orders are taught.
In grooming, under the cap-
able leadership of Miss P. Hey-
wood, the girls are shown how
to improve their own appear-
ance as well as being taught
the basic of a complete broom -
course.
Besides these specific trades,
we attempt to give the girls a
clearer idea of their own role in
life now and in the future as
possible mothers.
TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASED enrolment at the
WDHS a new gymnasium was constructed as part of the
expansion program. The new room is to the south of
the main school. It is extremely well lighted and is
painted in bright colors.
