Remember when Scarlet O'-
Hara tore down the curtains to
make a bal1gown?
Well Peggy OlmstedofPeggy
Claire Hats, Hamilton, hasn't
done exactly that but she is
making a very large part of her
spring hat collection in an all -
cotton drapery fabric by Cos-
mos Imperial Mills, Yarmouth,
N.S. And her customers love it.
"And why not?" asks Mrs.
Olmsted. "It's an excellent
millinery material. It has a
linen -like look, is pre-shrunk,
comes in 33 beautiful colors,
and makes wonderful packable
travelling hats."
w Milliners everywhere are ex-
pecting a big hat business this
Spring and Mrs. Olmsted is no
exception. The Gentlewoman
look (ladylike and correct) de-
mands a hat and should revive
to some extent the old rule: "A
lady is never seen without her
hat and gloves."
The Gentlewoman look
which brings in its wake a great
resurgence of pale shades in-
fluenced Mrs.Olmsted in her
choice of the washable drapery
fabric. She is predicting that
the pastel pinks and light lilac
will be especially popular and
is pleased that with the fabric
she has chosen her customers
have no worries about upkeep.
The fabric is also particular-
ly suited to the styles --- soft-
er, lower and wider with face
framing brims often turned up
in front.

"The money to finance our
work has been raised by fashion
shows run through the co-oper-
ation of Liberty Women's Wear,
Jordan Livingstone Furs and
Peggy Claire Hats. The models
taking part in these shows all
volunteer their time and are
members of the Fashion Ther-
apy Group", Mrs. Olmsted said,

come a dress designer, but be-
came more fascinated with mil-
linery and opened a hat shop of
her own in Hamilton.
She met her partner, Miss
Claire Bath, while she wascon-
ducting a millinery course for
the Community Programs
Branch of the Department of
Recreation at the O.A,C. in
Guelph. Miss Bath, a trained
nurse, was one of her brightest
students and they later opened
Peggy Claire Hats together.

A TOUCH of the Nautical Look is seen in
these two creations by Helen Harper, The
strong stripe effect is seen in the boat neck
pullover on the left. On the right is a white
cardigan with navy trim and striped dickey.
Both are fashioned in orlon.
avy and White
Paris is riding a white wave
for spring... white dresses, white
suits, white coats and white as
the accent on all other colors.
One designer with white fever
went so far as to decorate his
showroom and dress his staff in
white.
The world's top designers
have also re -issued navy --
good news for those women who
have never ceased to love this
traditional favorite.
From our own manufacturers
Canadians can expect a shower
of pastels -- pinks, blues, yel-
lows with pale robin's egg blue
particularly favored. Navy turns
up again -- this time accented
with green and appearing in
Chanel -type suits.
The most important look
Paris offers is that of t...: Gentle-
woman. Exemplified in gracious
and mannerly clothes, the con-
tours of the figure are softly
outlined with fashions that are
neither constricting nor loose
and shift -y. Many of these fash-
ions (especially long -jacketed
suits, bias -cut dresses) are a
nostalgic reminder of the thir-
ties.
When Paris isn't turning out
gracious ladies, it would appear
to be turning out schoolgirls. Re-
ports indicate that many clothes
Shown in Paris
are very young -looking with
short, swinging pleated skirts,
cropped jackets and low-heeled
shoes.
The movement in makeup,
however, is not that of the
scrubbed and shiny schoolgirl,
but the restrained and ladylike
appearance of the Gentlewom-
an. Pastel pink lipstick and nail
enamel; soft, gentle eyes are
its natural accompaniments.
They're choosing cotton or-
gandy, guipure lace, muslin,
batiste. They're choosing chif-
fons in mousseline, chantilly,
lace, shantung, crepe, organ-
za and silk.
Cotton toile or jersey, print-
ed or striped, vividly colored,
is new for sweaters and blouses,
And excitement is also generat-
ed by new surface interest in
tweeds, cordes, crepes, twills,
and other novelty fabrics. New
ways to rib piques, seersuckers
and ottomans are giving them
an entirely fresh appeal.
Cotton guipure lace with
toile or shantung is likely to
find favor in this country and
fashion innovators are going to
want cotton crochet which Paris
has revived for dresses.
For those who love challenge
of flamboyant prints there are
new editions in primitive de-
signs and reptile cottons.
Swimwear Takes on
Bright, Bold Colors
When a woman goes to the
beach she wants an entirely dif-
ferent loo,; from her daytime or
evening ready-to-wear, She
wants colors that will make her
look beautiful in sunlight and
will compliment her suntan.
The most important and ob-
vious fashion note in swimwear
is the bright, bold colors, both
in solids and in prints, in every
category of bathing suits. These
are the colors that show up
against water and sand; the
bright, vivid pinks, oranges,
greens and blues.
Two-piece suits are shown
in pleated skirts, bikinis, boy -
legs, hare -loon hr.l tops, Cull
coverage bra and built-up bra
tops.
The illusion of bareness In
some of the full coverage bra
suits is accomplished through
slimmer straps and narrowness
of back straps.
Blousons feature the drop -
waisted loot and the defined
waistline. Many can he worn
with the straps rucked in fol the
strapless loo;,, or with the sec-
urity of straps for those who feel
more comfortable with them.
The sheath bathing suit is
still a favorite with many wo-
men and is very attractive.
Scoop or V necks with low hacks,
eriss-cross backs, high hacks and
draped sheaths conic u1 plain
colors or floral patterns in a
number of fabrics.
Pure silk is not adaptable to
swimwear but the Arnel and
Tricot prints take on a beauti-
ful lustre in the sunlight which
rivals pure sill.,
Beach shifts go well with
bathing sults and ate praetteal
as they can also he worn tor
street wear.
These slip-on sltilts are re-
placulg the beach coats. They
are sometimes knee-length and
sometimes the length of tilt
suit. This summer shift will
appear in cottons and nylons,
Contrast on contrast in sport
and at-home fashions is shown
in the mixing of smooth and
textured surfaces, colors and
patterns, embroideries and
prints. Among the blends you
can expect to see: gingham
checks and calicos, abstract
stripes and paisleys and denim
and lace.
How's Your
Foundation?
It's important to begin with
rhe foundation when choosing
your wardrobe. If your own
"foundation" is not what it
used to be, a new and properly
fitted garment is your first step
to loo.<ing becoming in the
lovely spring suits and dresses.
The general trend in girdle
and pantie design this season is
the natural hack and frankly
rounded derriere. There are a
numrer of styles, including the
sarong pantie with split crotch
treatment, girdles with curved
side panels to give a semi-
natural bac.. and girdles which
dispense with panels and hand-
ing.
Flattering to spring fashions
is the unbroken line of the one-
piece garment and many of
these now feature stretch straps.
Manufacturers are ever
striving ,toward the comfort of
the wearer and there is a wide
range of light weight garments
in all styles that give extra con-
trol but are featherlight.
With summer in mind, a
pantie girdle that can he worn
with or without garters will be
the choice for vacation and'
sportswear. Today's women
prefer to look their best even
when relaxed and the pantie
girdle controls unbecoming
bulges.
Stretch straps, adjustable or
non-adjustable are one of the
most comfortable developments
in brassieres for active wonle. n
i11 marls years. They never
strain or slip, but give with
your every motentent. The
stretch straps allow ‘ ou to
