The Wingham Advance-Times, 1964-04-09, Page 4Page 4- Wingham Advance*Times, Thursday, April 9, 1964 NAVY A LINE DRESS with red and white trim on a sailor collar and dickey is simple but smart for the little girl's spring wardrobe. Little Girls and Grown-up Styles Youngsters have fallen in a big way for the grown-up styl- ing of the latest children's foot- wear. Children's shoes reflect their elders' in line, look and leather -- including smooth, grained, patent, suede, brush- ed and waxy leather textures. A fashion winner will be the shell pump in a bevy of bloom - in' colors. Many are charming- ly appliqued or decorated with tiny buttons or bows, other skimmers use punch -outs and cut-aways to striking effect. Straps, so popular with Mother:, prettify Sis' pumps in a variety of shapes. Joining the shell is the sub- teen sling sandal in lively col- ors and leathers. Here too, the detailing is pert and feminine, with the emphasis on cut-outs and bows. Tie shoes and slipons with a springlike freshness show off such trim as kiltie fringes, ghil- lie ties, decorative stitching. Some slipons are high -cut for a smart bootie look. Leather soles provide firm but resilient support for growing feet. Like all females, the sub - teener enjoys a new fashion twist on an old favorite. The saddle shoe gains added atten- tion with pastel or brightly col- ored saddles of suede and pat- ent leather over white smooth leather uppers. SPRING LINGERIE Makes You Feel Lovely Fashion has been re -propor- tioned. Skirt length remains the same but jackets are longer, giving a stretched -out shape. Hemlines have action -- in panels, flounces, pleats and flares -- showing off petticoats and pettipants. Bosom -baring necklines have appeared after winter's muffled look and waistlines are shaped and gently fitted. The long evening dress is softer with more flowing lines and beautifully draped. Fabrics are less bu1Ky, and chiffon and lace are being worn from the beach to the ball- room. This all means, of course, that what the women wear un- derneath is important. SoTt fabrics and soft lines are indis- pensable under the new soft look. Ladies' lingerie this spring is more colorful than ever. There are many shades of blue and flattering, rosy tones of pink. Lilac is coming back, in com- bination with the pinks and blues, and bravely standing by itself. The sunny colors are not to be overlooked. Yellow is a perennial spring favorite in its rich and golden tones and bright clear greens are soft and flat- tering to a woman's complex- ion. Prints still abound, more colorful and bigger and bolder than ever. There are also multi -colored tweeds, checks and plaids. What does a wom- an wear under this symphony of color? One of the nude tones such as blush, a clear skin tone in the peach family. Coral anc apricot shades are to be worn under all ready-to-wear but are especially nice as a background for prints. We think of black and white as basics, which they are, but this season they come together as the splashiest prints on the marttet. A black on a white ground dress takes a white slip, and a black ground print a black slip. The new petti-slip is a won- derful garment that combines comfort, freedom and walking ease with the ultra feminine look of a skirt. PRETTY SLEEPWEAR These beautiful colors are also prevelant in peignoir sets, sleep coats, shift, waltz and long gowns, and pyjamas. There are pretty peignoir sets with extravagant fullness in the flowing skirts, shift or full length. If you like lace there are sets trimmed with lace ap- pliques and deep lace hemlines. Others are less decorative but have a frothy, dainty appear- ance. Sleepcoats and gowns are real boudoir beauties in such feminine fabrics as chiffon ny- lon tricot and rayon. Petti-pants are smart and practical for wear under lined knitted dresses, culottes and slim line skirts. Dorm Gowns Have you noticed the smart dormitory gowns for the young ladies? Along with shortie nighties and pyjamas these gowns are ma.krng quite a hit. The dorms come in prints with lace or eyelet trim and long sleeves. Some are de - igned on the A line with large patch poc, tets. The diagonal stripe is also a new feature. BACK IN PICTURE The fringed wool stole is back in the fashion picture. It is often seen in a triangular shape in plaid and is a wonder- ful accessory for a wool dress. HIGHLY FASHIONABLE are the color matched gloves, scarves and accessories that are seen this season. In this particular group there are three lengths of gloves, the shortie (top centre), and the bracelet length, and the cocktail length at lower left. The youthful topsicle scarf is seen upper KAYSER - ROTH OF CANADA left. The whimsy with floral bouquet is shown with the all-over embroidery style oblong scarf and beneath it is the floral - edged oblong with appliques. These items are all perfectly matched and are priced to be purchased separately. Millinery's soft touch is in- terpreted in felts, velours, furs, and fabrics in a variety of young sophisticated shapes to suit the rnood of fashion. Wo- men will find softie hats per- fect for town and travel. Felt is fashion's favorite fa- bric for face -flattering hats. Designed in soft, slouchy sil- houettes, felts are side flip -ups with chin straps, stitched slouches, cloches, carefree, snappy brims and side dips with foreward tilts. Hats go country -casual to top off sporty daytime fashions. In a 'mannish mood,' but decid- edly feminine, are tweed, lea- ther, suede, reptile and felt in rustic pork -pies, riding and hunting caps and berets. The "muffled -up" look in scarved or bulky collared suits and coats is carried out in "mys- terious" hats reminiscent of the Garbo era. Slouchy felts shield the face, as do caps withmys- tery visors, and hats swathed in scarves or buried in fur. The "lady of mystery" will accent her cocktail dresses and theater suits with veiled whimsies. Fashion is fascinated with fur, and real or frankly fake hats are both warm and fashion. able. The feathery look is sleek and chic in slouchy daytime millinery, and opulent in fea- ther fantasies for after -five. Leather makes fashion head- lines, in casual cloche, slouch or cap shapes. Very sporty us- ed alone. It also makes news as a trim in bands, chin straps and brims in a variety of plain and patent leather colors. Gloves and Scarves in Gay Colours This spring there is a terrific change in the use of color in ready-to-wear. In previous seasons the great emphasis was placed upon exact color -to - color matching or tone -on - tone. Emphasis this year is on three and four tone combina- tions in ladies' wear outfits. With this in mind, glove and scarf manufacturers have sup- plied us with a host of beautiful colors in varying shades. Shortie slip on gloves, bracelet length, and cocktail length gloves are featured with attractive side shirrings, all - lace backs, lace sides and fourchettes, delicate embroi- dery in dainty designs, rows of shirring with faggotting stitch side panels, and inserts at the tops of the gloves. A lacy stretch glove now on the mar- ket fits all sizes. Scarves that co-ordinate are popular this spring and in some lines you can also buy a match- ing whimsy or the topsicle scar a triangular scarf that ties and the nape of the neck. TEENAGERS LIKE THE CO-ORDINATES Chanel suits, or blazers that can be worn with pleated skirts and printed tops, add variet' to the wardrobe of the teenage girl. Co-ordinates in dress -up and casual garments stretch the bud- get and many high school girls are making their mix and match choices wisel) . Blends of Terylene, Arnels, cottons and cotton ,trait are ex- cellent choices for school togs. SEE ALL ANGLES When a woman buys a hat, she should not make the mis- take of looking at it from a front view only. Study both sides and the back as well. If all angles don't pass muster, don't buy the hat.
