The Wingham Advance-Times, 1964-04-09, Page 3Shirts and Ties Should
Be Carefully Chosen
There is a shirt collar to
suit every man. The long -
pointed ones go best with round
or broad faces; the widespread
Collar is for the man with a
long, narrow or medium face;
and men with long necks should
favor the tab. The regular col-
lar is suitable for most men.
A tie with a Windsor knot
looi<s best with a wide collar
but the four-in-hand should be
used for the tab or narrow col-
lars, The bow tie looks fresh
and dapper but emphasizes
shortness and breadth if the man
is short or stout.
If the tie is a large pattern
the shirt should be a solid color
or a plain white. Likewise a
modest design in a tie goes
rvell,wizha bold shirt and may
blend or contrast with the color
of the shirt or suit.
A spot -free and neatly
pressed tie provides the finish-
ing loo,. to an outfit. The fab-
ric should be chosen wisely and
to resist wear and soil it should
have body.
Ties should be hung up im-
mediately after wearing. To
remove wrinkles, cut cardboard
patterns for both halves of the
tie and place them inside for
pressing. This helps to hold the
tie in shape, straighten edges
and prevents shiny seams. A
steam iron is excellent for
pressing ties.
Shorts Add to
Summer Comfort
Shorts are rapidly becoming
a part of men's wearing apparel
for summer, and why not? They
are much cooler for beach, bac
yard and suburban wear than
slacks.
The most flattering style for
men is two inches above the
Knee. Plaid gives a thinner ap-
pearance for the stout man. To
look taller select a sport shirt
in a blending rather than con-
trasting color.
Be sure to buy materials that
have been treated for shrink -
resistance and stain -resistance.
Some cottons have been treated
for added crispness, which
makes them easier to care for
and better looking,

short trousers, figured vest and
matching bow tie. There are
similar outfits with long pants
and lined jackets.
Three-piece jodhpur sets are
smart and warm for both boys
and girls. Sailor suits are still
popular, and here again there
are brother and sister fashions.
Frou frou. diaper sets with
dainty trim, or pretty dresses

baby girls and toddlers.

Styling, Too
The lassies are not alone in
following the fashion lead set
by grown-ups toward restrained
shoe styling. Lads will be
marching right beside their
Dads wearing their own youth-
ful versions of trim oxfords,
brogues and boot -shoes in light-
weight
ightweight smooth and grained
leathers.
The handsewn leather moc-
casin in waxy or glove leathers
continues to be a year-round
winner with the young male.
Constructed with leather uppers
and leather sole, the moc is
rugged enough to withstand the
most punishing treatment -- in-
cluding life with a typical Can-
adian boy.
The sleek lines of the slipon
puts the zing into spring for •
young party -goers. Slipons may
be highlighted with gored in-
serts or decorative closings at
the sides, and come Tully lined
in leather for a smooth, com-
fortable fit.
Many Choices
In Sportcoats
There is plenty of variety
for the young lads in sports
jackets this season, They come
in herringbone checks and
plaids and in pastel .colors.
One line featured in linen or
flannel has been shown without
lapels. It sports the tapered
look and a half belt.
Of course, the navy blazer
is still in style and lends itself
well to summer trousers.
There are laminated rever-
sible jackets for all-weather
wear; jackets with mohair fronts
and laminated boucle sleeves
and backs; and those with sim-
ulated leather fronts and lam-
inated boucle sleeves and back.
A new feature for extra
comfort in topcoats is a sleeve
that is set in at the front and
raglan at the back. This does
away with pull and gives a bet-
ter fit over the suitcoat.
ALL—WEATHER COATS
PLEASE BOYS,GIRLS
All weather coats, with
water repellent fabrics in tar-
tan design reversing to solid
color, plain reversing to gay
prints or plain reversing to
plain, are popular with chil-
dren and teenagers for spring.
They are styled for both boys
and girls.
Hooded, fleeced cotton
jackets with front pockets, and
the new squall jackets. oflight-
weight, waterproof nylon with
kangaroo pockets are excellent
as children's play togs.
Of course, the blazer is still
with us and it's pretty hard to
find anything smarter for the
young lass than a navy blazer
with white pleated vyella si<irt,
There's a blazer for brother,
too, with short trousers, but if
he's four-ish he will feel that
he is really stepping out in a
pair of longs to go with his
blazer.
Little girls and their older
sisters will Like the attractive
mohair coats in pastel colors.
Wool is coming hack and there
are also pretty, silk boucle lam-
inate coats.

Proper Style Choice to
Diminish Width, Height
The short, stout man must
avoid thick or rough fabrics. A
single-breasted jacket adds
height. Tapered trousers with-
out cuffs have a slimming ef-
fect but neither trousers nor
jacket should be tight fitting.
He should not wear loud pat-
terns. Smooth suitings with
vertical designs are encouraged.
New Glow Look
In Men's Fabrics
The neat, trim look both in
the shoulder area and the trou-
ser area in suits and sportscoats
for men is the trend for spring.
The natural shoulder effect
is popular, lightweight blends
of Terylene and wool, and
wool and mohair in lighter and
brighter colorings and shadings
coming to the fore.
The "Lustre Look" or"Glow
Look" in the season's fabrics
for men's apparel is created by
blending the several different
shadings, browns and blues in
particular, to produce an iri-
descent appearance.
A short topcoat makes the
legs appear longer, Long la-
pels and tapered sleeves on
jackets and coats, tapered hat
crowns, long collar points and
simple shoes all add height,
The tall rnan has his prob-
lems, too. The boxy appear-
ance of plaids or checks adds
width. He should leave the
smooth fabrics to the stout man
and lean toward tweeds, etc,
for a bulky look.
Low crowns and trim hat
brims cut a little off the height.
It also helps to wear a horizon-
tally striped tie, spread collar
and long double breasted over-
coat.
FOR THE GOLFER
A new action sport jacket
that will be popular with golf-
ers this year has an action back
with ventilated armpits, It is
made in washable Terylene.
There are Terylene pants to
match in either slim or regular
styles,
Add to this a washable Sam-
my hat with unbreakable visor
and the male golfer is ready for
the course.
Handbags Are Deep
Rather than Wide
You will be well -armed this
spring with a new softly -styled
leather handbag. Indications
are that detailing j.s more fem-
inine and leathers are more ele-
gant than ever.
Small to largish in size --
with just a few,of the oversized
feed -bag variety — this year's
crop of handbags are deep rath-
er than wide, and are consider-
ably softened in outline and
styling. The handsomest leath-
er tannages, many interpreted
in newly developed finishes,
have been used to create this
winsome spring collection...
including grained, smooth,
waxy, suede, lustre and patent
leathers. With fashion project-
ing a delicate, more romantic
image, handbags in these beau-
tiful leathers will add their own
shapely charm to a well-round-
ed wardrobe.
Spacious but not cumber-
some, the expandable satchel,
pouch and tore were shown at
spring previews in grained and
brushed leathers, as well as the
"natural" tannages. In addition
to the natural leather colors,
these daytime dandies come in
a wealth of springtime shades,
including the newest pale tones.
Dress bags for daytime -wear
parade such pretty effects as
tucks and shirring, scallops,
cut-outs and embossing. Popu-
lar silhouettes in this category
are the envelope, the pouch
and the box bag --rounded or
angular. From these wardrobe
winners in leather flows an ele-
gance that matches the season's
most graceful new costumes.
The excitement of after -
dark fashion glows in the beau-
tiful evening bags shown for
the new year. The sleekness of
suede and the gleam of polish-
ed leather vie with many_satiny
lustre leathers and distinctive
reptiles for top honors in petite
envelopes, clutches and chained
pouches.
Light is right when chosing a
handbag color. The pastel pal-
ette i all-encompassing -- blue,
yellow, pink, green. Other
favored shades will be scarlet,
navy and bright blue,
