Now available in both hats and caps, these creations are ideal for spring and compliment to- day's casual outerwear. Felts are definitely softening to lighter tones -- greys, and blue greys being most popular. Felts are lightweight, compli- mented with narrow hands and linings of nylon mesh. The greatest demand is for the soft, tapering pinch fronts and centre creases, with brim dimensions from 11 to 1 3/4. Wider brims and more staple crowns are still available to the consumer who prefers these styles. SUMMER STRAWS The departure from charcoal tones is evident in the season's straw hats, with sands, light olives and greys increasing in popularity. Bands are gay in design, yet subdued in color to compliment the various braids. Silk types head the list. The variety of braids is wide, everything from Coconuts to Panamas and the fine Milens. There are in excess of 50 dif- ferent braid and body types of straw headwear available to the Canadian consumer. In straws as in felts, the dressy, soft tapering pinch fronts and centre creases, with brims of 1 i to 1 3/4 inches pre- vail, The telescope, with a more casual air, remains popu- lar, and of course, staple styles with brims 24 are still in de- mand in the Panama family. For the young "sharp dresser" the Triune Line, with brim of 14 and more extreme styling has been the choice. Biltmore had not forgotten the sportsman and has a variety of "fun and sun" headwear, ideal for the beach and holiday season, that is extreme with creations for every occasion. The golfer has a wide sel- ection of casual and sport styles to choose from, as well as the more conservative modes in the Executive Golfer field, CORRECT ACCESSORIES FOR THE GREY SUIT The silvergrty runts are high fashion in men's st,its this sea- son and are recommended for day rime or after six wear. A white shirt with permanent fused collar and French cuffs are suggested for after six. For daytime choose a blue oxford cloth shirt with button down collar and singlt cuffs or a multi-stri, e. broadcloth shirt with dome -tab collar. Swiss silk poc:.et squares can be co-ordinated with Swiss silk ties in stripes or all over design. There are also links and tact( sets that co-ordinate with grey suits for string. Colourful Spring Ahead for Men Bright colors were shown in co-ordinated fashions for men in Los Angeles this spring by the American Institute of Men's and Boy's Wear. Examples of the colorful ar- ray were a blue and whiteplaid coat worn with grey pants and a green flannel coat with yellow gabardine slacks, THE TREND in men's sportcoats seems to be a popularity towards the heavier Shetland types. They're showing the jac-shirt which is a shirt built onto a hip band in many different versions. It will be available fashioned with front panels or detailed with contrast bands and embroidery. It will also have (in case you're wider or narrower over the hips than you suspected) adjustable side tabs or side laces. In California where the cli- mate lets them get to these things faster than us, seersucker is the rage. For some men strip- ed seersucker has never been out of fashion --- now they have a choice of glen plaids, tiny checks and a pattern which imitates madras. The big fashion news for golfers is give --- the kind you get from stretch denim and gabardine jackets and slacks. Airy cotton knits are also being shown for golfers in shirts and cardigans. Suedine windbreakers are fashionable (new) and so is the embroidered shirt pocket and the Italian roll collar. Look for belts to reappear on pants (they've been absent for some time) and for jamiaca shorts to replace the longer bermuda type. Top colors for spring and summer are bone and egg -shell accessorized with bottle green, bark and brown prints. Butyou won't be far wrong with blue or grey accented with cranberry and wine. In any event, the trend is away from black and navy. If you want to bring out the beast that lurks within -- you'll be interested in the fur print terry cloths. You'll see these printed in leopard, ocelot and zebra patterns. Caps and Hats For Little Boys Little boys will be pleased with the smart headwear that has been designed for them this spring. Fashion features include tassel ties, strap treatments, side gores, and combinations of textures or colors, The leather oxford is a sta- ple in almost every man's shoe wardrol:e. This year, the long 1 YOU CAN'T WEAR BETTER FITTING SHOES qi gi list of styling variations on the oxford theme gets new additions in moe seam .effects, wing -tips; high-riding tongues, and hand - stitching. A dress shoe to depend on -- season in, season out -- is the handsome brogue, Recent streamlining has fined down the grains, lightened the leathers and slimmed the silhouette of the brogue. But its hearty mas- culinity is sustained through the use of perforations, pinking de- tails, and five and six -eyelet closings. Wafer-thin linings of porous leather t<eep feet cool and dry throughout the warm- est day. Formally attired, the slip- on drops the ties and strap treat- ments and adapt a sleek look. Side gores are hidden, toes are plain or wing -tip, and textures are mirror smooth or very fine grained. Rich tones of brown -- cord- ovan, deep brown, golden brown -- are most important in men's footwear this spring. Mul- oerry and black are also seen for dress wear, while charcoal tan, sand, taupe and the full color range of the natural tan- nages are' favored shades for casuals, Shoes should be polished early, even before their first wearing. It darkens the leath- er and removes that naive, new loo.( as well as lubricating the leather. Shoe trees take the wrinkles out of shoes and bring them new life, giving them a new count- enance to present to the world. A good shoe tree, fashioned in wood or plastic, w ill have chan- nels to allow the moisture to es- cape. Metal, unless treated to resist, will rust. It is almost impossible to avoid getting shoes soaking wet at least once in their lives. Do not dry shoes on or near a rad- iator, Shoes should he dried at room temperatures then placed on trees and polished to restore the finish and lubricate the leather.
