Seen here are Mrs. Elgin Johns- ton, Miss Mary Hehn and Mrs. Robert Johnston at one of the tea tables. By MARVIN HOWE, M.P. Report from Parliament Hill Monday, March 16th, was budget night in Canada. I sometimes wonder whether the average individual in Canada places as much emphasis on this annual event as we in Ot- tawa. However, as your repre- sentative, I feel it is of the ut- most importance to every man, woman and child in Canada, The Minister of Finance has learned a lesson at last and that is to depend on the experi- enced officials in his Depart- ment to assist him in prepara- tion of this nationally impor- tant document, rather than de- pend on the advice of young, inexperienced specialists from the business world, as was the case last year. We were all happy to learn that there was to be no increase in taxation, although many had hoped that the troublesome tax on building materials and pro- duction machinery would have DONNYBROOK DONNYBROOK --Mrs. Sam Thompson, Mrs. William Hardy and Mrs. Hilliard Jefferson at-. tended the meeting of Huron Presbyterial United Church Wo- men, which was held Wednes- day in James Street United Church, Exeter. Mr. and Mrs, John Noble, Stephen, Roger, Sherry and Eddie of Parkhill, visited Sat- urday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Chamney and km- ily. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs, Wesley Jefferson on the bir of a son March 23, a brr, ther for Debbie, Brian, Ger- ald and Doreen. DRAW WINNERS Winners of the draw at Warren House last week were Miss Barbara Hetherington, Beatle wig; Miss Janis Hayes and Teen -Town, promotion records. The draw was made by Miss Mary Lou Jamieson. been removed. The provision of family al- lowances for children 16 and 1'7 who remain in school will.be welcome assistance to the fam- ily budget. The other item of great in- terest which I would like to mention is the contentious Can- ada Pension Plan. In the first place, how it can be called a Canada Pension Plan when one of the largest Provinces indicat- ed that it could not participate from the very first, is a mys- tery to me. Secondly, there will be no additional benefits for those at present receiving Old Age Security. Farmers, small business -men, unem- ployed people may participate but will pay the entire premi- um themselves, which I feel in time will become much larg- er than the proposed 2%. Finally, I sometimes wonder whether we as legislators have the right to saddle our children and our children's children with taxes for social welfare which they may be well night unable to carry at a time when they are establishing businesses, homes and raising families. I am in favour of some kind of contributory pension plan and will discuss this further on my radio programme over CKNX, Sunday, March 29th, at 6.10 P.M. MRS. R. E.
