CURLING
CAPSULES
After you have been curl-
ing for a while you will
likely look back many times
on one particular shot, or
a specific end that stands
out prominently in your
curling life. There have
been many such situations
in my career, and espe-
cially the last five years.
Some of those memories,
are happy recollections.
There are a few we would
prefer to forget, but can't.
These, however, serve as
good reminders especially
when a similar situation
arises in an important
match.
One particular game, and
one all-important end
spoiled our chance for a
• third straight Brier Cham-
pionship in 1961 and it hap-
pened in our own Regina
City playdowns. This is a
blot I would like to be able
to erase from the records
of the Richardson rink.

CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT
PICTURES
Bill Clarke, a former Cana-
dian Schoolboy champion
who had three excellent
shotmakers with him on his
rink, Clarke had tied the
score with a single on the
12th end forcing the extra
play, but giving me last
stone on the end.
After the leads and sec-
onds had played their
stones we were left with a
couple of long guards. This
came about when we hit
too straight on in taking
Clarke's stones off trying to
keep the end open.
Clarke took advantage
and had his third man draw
in behind our front stones.
My choice was either to
have my third, A r n o l d,
draw behind and freeze to
their stone, or knock the
guards off. What would you
do?
I had Arnold draw in be-
hind and he did just that,
stopping about three inches
short of the shot stone.
TOO LATE
There were two reasons
for playing a draw. First,
Arnold had made a perfect
draw with his last stone on
the 12th end and knew the
weight. Secondly, I felt it
was too late in the end to
be trying to pound off
guards with the third man's
last stone.
Bill Clarke immediately
put an extra guard on and
at that point I had a choice
of two difficult shots, and
not a very pleastn choice.
One was to draw around the
guards to the button using
the out -turn. The other was
the in -turn chip.
The chip wouldn't have
been too difficult had I been
sure of the ice, but we had
not played a shot there on
the in -turn for five or six
ends. Although this posed a
problem it appeared to be
easier than trying to draw
the button. At least that's
what I thought at the time.
I would like the chance to
play it over again.
A MISS
A likely looking shot
caught a slight run in the
ice and fell back against the
turn just enough to miss
what I was after. My stone
just grazed the shot stone
and tipped it in on the but-
ton directly behind the
guard.

Clarke guarded the out-
turn draw perfectly and I
was unable to get the shot
stone out and our chance for
a third straight Brier went
out the window.
The memory of that de-
feat has been almost blotted
out by our good fortune in
winning two more Brier
championships.

COMMERCIAL LEAGUE
Seems as if last week's warn-
ing that we were going into our
last quarter caused everyone to
buckle down this week. Spares
for the night were Elaine Col-
vin, Vicki Wild, Ev. Rapson,
Helen Casemore, Jack Walker
and Walter Brown.
Spare Ev. Rapson came
through with an excellent game
of 303, thus earning an extra
point for her team by taking the
high single. Shirley Storey
took the high triple with 735.
Jim Bain came up with the
men's high single with 323 and
Ernie Walker took the high tri-
ple with 658.
Team standings: Sioux 97;
Hurons 97; Iroquois 92; Crees
91; Apaches 53; Mohawks 49.
Looks as if the Sioux and the
Hurons are going to have a bat-
tle ort their hands for firstplace.
I am still not ready to place
my bets as to the outcome.
Anything can happen during the
next five weeks. One thing is
sure. The Iroquois and the
Crees won't be sitting back
watching. They will be right
in there working for first place.
Saw Anne Geddes with her
team. Nice to see you back,
Anne.
