Service R. A. Logan funeral home, Dor- chester, How Are Your Resolutions Standing Up? Why is our conscience more active in January than in, say, July? You never heard of a First of July Good Resolution, did you? Perhaps it is the cold weather that reminds us of our sins — did not the poet Dante assert, in the Divine Comedy, that the nethermost Hell con- sists of ice, rather than of fire? Equally pertinent is the ques- tion of why our conscience, which glowed so brightly on January 1, flickers so feebly on January 15, and is ordinarily extinguished by February 1 (when the climate is not notice- ably warmer, anyway), It e Corm ■g Events 1 OJ)DPELLOWS EUC1iI1;E Party will be held Friday, February 28, in the Oddfe'llows Hall at 8,30 p.m. Everybody. wel- come, 13-20b VALENTINE DANCE Will be held in the Foresters Hall, Belgrave, on Friday, Feb, 14th. Because of this, a card game was given the name "faro." In the American West of the (lith century, one of the most popu- lar gambling games was that same faro, which has not changed since it was first play- ed. would seem that, like the small boy whose eye is bigger than his stomach, we have a greater capacity for recognizing needs than for filling them — or as Shakespeare more elegantly put it, "the native hue of resolu- tion is sicklied o'er with the pale case of thought". And so the flaming resolutions of New Year's Day are speedily dowsed as impractical (i. e. inconven- ient), and their ashes swept un- der the rug of forgetfulness — usually about two weeks later. One way round this shame- ful situation is to make only those resolutions that you can be reasonably sure you will keep -- such as that you will abstain from piracy on the high seas, and from robbing stage coaches. Theologians and philosophers are likely to reject these as not entirely in har- mony with the true spirit of the thing. But there is something to be said for them — at least you are unlikely to suffer any drop in your self-esteem by failing to keep them up. Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers The Garter and the motto "Fioni Solt Qui Mal Y Pense" are Royal devices accorded to "Royal" corps and regiments. Adopted from the Royal En- gineers, the cap badge of the RCE has maple leaves in place of a wreath of laurel. Camp Chilliwack, B.C., is home station for the "sappers".
