FRIDAY NIGHT
ERNIE RICHARDSON'S
CURLING
CAPSULES
LES
Although great stress has
been put on the hitting
game in major curling com-
petition, the draw shot and
mastery of draw weight is
equally important.
And the ability to switch
from takeouts to draw
weight on any given shot
can be the difference be-
tween success and failure
in curling. By the same
token, it is necessary to be
able to switch from the
draw type of play to hitting
with equal effectiveness.
You should switch to the
draw game from hitting
when you are down two or
three shots. It doesn't pay,
however, to gamble too
soon unless you have your
weight down reasonably
well.
Should the ice be tricky
and hard to hit on, it is
best to switch to a draw
game as quickly as pos-
sible. You might also try to
• get your opposition hitting.
LEADING
Generally it is advisable
when you get ahead two or
three points to try to hit
everything in sight. Opposi-
tion stones, either out in

front, or in the house
should be removed.
In case you are not for-
tunate enough to have a
good hitting team, you are
better off to stay with the
type of game you were
playing when you attained
a lead of two or three shots.
The secret is to get the
other fellow playing the
style of game you are best
at and this requires some
forcing of action on your
part. If you are better at
hitting than at draw, and
are playing a good draw
team, try to get them shoot-
ing as soon as possible. To
do this you must keep the
front clear of all guards or
they will force you to play
their game.
When playing a good hit-
ting team and you don't
feel you can hit with them,
draw your rocks in front
of the house and wait for
them to miss. When they
do, either raise .or draw
around your front rocks.
Then as long as you can
keep them hitting you have
the advantage.
CONDITIONS
My experience in all
types of competition has
been that the condition of
the ice has a tremendous
bearing on the style of
game one should play. And
this is particularly impor-
tant to a new or somewhat
inexperienced skip.
When playing on ice that
is straight and keen you
will find it just as easy to
hit as it is to draw, and so

you can adopt the normal
game you play best.
Should the ice be heavy
and swingy, you will find it
much more difficult to hit
than to draw. So, the first
team to get the draw weight
down will have the advan-
tage.
Playing on crooked ice
that has kickbacks where
the rock falls against the
turn, it is much easier to
draw than to hit. Under
these conditions, if you
can keep your opponent
hitting you should have no
trouble winning your
games.
It all boils down to be-
ing strong and accurate
enough to make your op-
ponents play the style of
game at which you are best.

Juveniles Take
Detroit Team 9-3
The more than 600 cheering
fans spurred the Wingham Le-
gionnaire Juveniles to a 9-3
victory over the Detroit Juven-
iles in Saturday night's second
game.
The local boys put on one
of the best exhibitions of hoc-
key the local fans have seen in
many years. Their good posi-
tional play and crisp passing
brought roar after roar from the
crowd. Perhaps now the local
team will get some support, af-
ter the display they put on,
against Detroit.
Wayne Maslen led the
Legionnaire's attack with 3
goals. Doug Campbell notched
2 goals and an assist. Other
Wingham scorers were Jon Bate-
son, George Kerr, Jim English,
and Martin Garniss.
This Friday the Legionnaires
play host to the Hanover Juven-
iles, at 9 o'clock. See you at
the arena?

COMMERCIAL LEAGUE
For some reason we seemed
to enjoy ourselves more than
usual tonight, The Crees and
Apaches were making so much
noise, they surely must have
been heard on the Main Street.
The other four teams were hold-
ing their own too.
Elaine Colvin, Helen Case -
more, Vicki Wild, Al Hafer-
mehl and Jack Walker spared
for us, for which we thank
them.
After a two week absence,
our pal, Ruth Lott came back
to take the high single with
268 and the triple with 683.
Methinks she should share that
Tonic with the rest of us. Joe
Schneider, however, swears
by Root Beer. He took the
men's high single with 297 and
the high triple with 723.
Team standings now are:
Hurons '77; Crees '76; Sioux '73;
Iroquois 67; Apaches 44; Mo-
hawks 40.
Checked with Rita Cameron
and was pleased to hear that
while she may not be able to
bowl just yet, her leg is im-
proving and she is hoping to
get back to join her team-
mates before our season ends.
Root Beer or Tonic, anyone!

SCORE 10-3
Midgets Lose to
Detroit Squad
Minor Hockey Night in
Wingham last Saturday could
be called a "howling success",
A winter storm was howling out-
side
utside and the sizeable crowd was
every bit as noisy inside.
The evening began at 7:00
with the Detroit and Wingham
Midgets. Early in the second
period, Detroit led 2-1 on
goals by North and Pilote and
Wingham's goal scored by Mit-
chell. But then Detroit got
through to Wingham, scoring
six goals in the second .eriod,
three of them within a space of
five minutes.
In the first four minutes of
the third period, Wingham
scored twice, Renwick and
Deycll being the marksmen.
Wade, in the Detroit net, call-
ed a halt to Wingham's scoring
from then on, his team-mates
added two third period goals
for a final score of 10-3.
At the conclusion of the
Midget game, two teams of
Squirts took to the ice and the
crowd was noisily appreciative
of their efforts. They're real
crowd pleasers, and the young-
sters take their hockey quite
seriously. Their performance
spoke well for their coaches,
Del Ewing and Jim Bain,
Two tickets to the Feb. 22
game in the Olympia at De-
troit were the main prize of
the evening. W,O,A,A, Presi-
dent Johnny Crewson dropped
the opening puck of the night,
and made the draw for the
tickets. The winner was Wal}
ter Woods, of RAZ. 1, Wing -
ham.
WINS HIGH SCHOOL 'SPIEL—John Ma -

a close game right to the wire, John win-
ning by an 8-5 count in the last end. The

Wingham 12-1
After a fine exhibi-ion of
hockey Saturday night the
Wingham Squirts coasted to a
12-1 defeat at the hands of
Goderich on Monday.
The Wingham boys were
strong in number and enthusi-
asm, but the expert skating
and shooting ability of the
Goderich club seemed to have
them stumped. Goderich both
out -skated and out -shot the
Wingham lads.
Better tighten up the skates
boys, we are going to have to
practise a lot harder.
