The annual congregational
meeting of the Gorrie United
Church will be held Monday,
January 20, at 8.30 p.m.
The C.C. W. of Gorrie Unit-
ed Church will be held Jan. 29
(note change of date).
Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Elschner
and family visited Mr. and Mrs.
Garnet Baker of St. Marys on
Sunday.
The annual vestry meeting
of St. Stephen's Anglican
Church will be held in the base-
ment on Monday evening, Jan.
20th at 8.30.
The W. A. of St. Stephen's
Church will meet on Thursday
at the home of Mrs, Norman
Wade at 2.30 p.m.
To Hold Service
Of Dedication
At St. Stephen's
GORRIE--St. Stephen's
Church has recently undergone
considerable improvement. The
walls of the nave have been
panelled in polished wood, and
a new broadloom carpet has
been laid in the aisle and across
the front of the chancel. The
new carpet is the gift of St.
Stephen's Ladies' Guild.
A special service of dedi-
cation and thanksgiving will
take place on Sunday at 2.30
p.m., when the new wood-
work and carpet will be dedi-
cated to the glory of God. Other
gifts to be dedicated are a ser-
vice book for dse on the Holy
Table and a set of burses and
veils in the liturgical colours.
The service book was presented
to St. Stephen's by Ted Wisby
of Stratford and the burses and
veils by Mrs. Gerald Gray of
Sudbury.
The guest preacher is to be
the Rev. C. F. Johnson, L.Th.,
rector of St. Paul's Churetr,
Wingham, who is well known
in the area especially for his
radio and television appear-
ances over CKNX.
The rector of St. Stephen's
is Rev. G. A. Anderson, D.F.
C. Members of other congre-
gations are especially invited
to this service. The offering
will go towards the cost of reno-
vations.
EUCHRE WINNERS AT
NURSES' RESIDENCE
A euchre party was held last
Thursday evening in the recre-
ation room of the nurses' resi-
dence, under the auspices of
the Personnel Conference Com-
mittee, Seven tables were in
play,
Prizes went to Mrs. Helen
Cascmore, high lady; high man,
Lorne Edwards; lady playing as
man, Miss Verna Harrison; low
lady, Mrs. Frank Burke; low
man, Ed Marsh, The door
prize was won by Mrs. Jean
Crump.
The buckboard is u horse-
drawn, four -wheeled vehicle
without springs.
Wage Increases Set
By Howick Council
The inaugural meeting of
the Howick Township Council
for 1994 was held in the clerk's
office on January 6th when all
members were present and sub-
scribed to the declaration of
office of their respective offices
as follows: Ivan Haskins, reeve;
Robert Gibson, deputy reeve;
councillors, Frank King, E. H.
Strong, and Harvey McMichael.
Rev. Fred W. Taylor of the
Gorrie United Church was pre-
sent and conducted the devo-
tional period.
It was moved to reopen the
court of revision on the assess-
ment roll on Wednesday, Feb.
5th at 2, 30 p.m. and to join
the Association of Rural Munici-
palities and the Wingham Hos-
pital Board.
The following community
centre boards were appointed:
Belmore, Ivan Haskins, Frank

to the Wingham Hospital Board

to the Howick Municipal Rec-
reation Committee-.
Ivan Haskins, E. H. Strong
and Warren Zurbrigg were ap-
pointed to the Pioneer Park
Committee, E. H. Strong to
the Maitland Valley Conserva-
tion Authority, and Ivan Has-
kins to the Saugeen Valley Con-
servation Authority.
Ivan Haskins is relief Ad-
ministrator for the year 1964,
Alvin Simpson, pound keeper,
Ivan Haskins, representative to
Listowel and Wingham Fire
Areas, and Roy Strong is build-
ing inspector.
Alvin Fitch was refunded
$4.00 on dog tax, The clerk
and reeve were authorized to
sign the application for the bal-
ance of the road subsidy and the
borrowing by-law was read and
passed.
Council will investigate the
possibility of disposing of the
Gorrie shed. The Salvation
Army was voted its usual grant
of $20 and the St. John Ambu-
lance $10.
Eakins and MacDonald will
be engaged for 1964 at a salary
of 81, 025. The clerk will re,-
ccive $50 a month for clerical
assistance on the road accounts
and the assessor will he given
an increase of $100. The grad-
er operator and road superin-
tendent will receive a $]00 in-
crease in salary. The road
superintendent was also author-
ized to purchase the necessary
culverts needed for 1994.

meeting of the United Church
Women was held with Mrs. Wm.
Wilson presiding. Reports for
the year 1903 were given by
the officers and chairmen of
committees. All reports were
very gratifying with all obliga-
tions met and the U.C, W. able
to vote a donation of $600.00
to the Board of Stewards of the
church,
The installation service for
the new 1964 officers was con-

R. Armstrong Dies In Palmerston Hosp.
FORDWICH— Richmond Arm- ' the 6th concession of Howick
strong, a blacksmith for several
years at Molesworth, Newry
and Milverton and a Howick
Township farmer, died on Jan-
uary 5 in Palmerston Hospital
after a short illness.
Mr. Armstrong was born on

home Friday from a three weeks`
trip to Germany, where he
visited his mother and other
members of his family.

and Brian of Cooksville were
week -end guests with Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Simmons.
Miss Shirley Eurig enjoyed a
week's holiday with her par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Parker

late Mr.Diek Armstrong.
Mr, Larry Marriner visited
friends in Kitchener over the
week -end.

bell of Winthrop visited Sun-
day with Mr. and Mts. Robt.
Ilibherd and with Mr. Wtn.

Mr. and Mrs, John Baylor in
Gorrie.
Mr. and Mrs, Merman Neth-
erey of Brussgls visited Thurs-
day with Mr. and Mrs. Curtis
Jordan and on Sunday Mr. and
Mrs. Ken Jordan and family of
Woodstock visited at the same
home.
Show Films of
Trip to Ireland
FORDWICH--The January
meeting of St, Anne's Guild
was held in the basement of the
church and opened with a
hymn followed by the Lord's
prayer. The president express-
ed her pleasure in the excellent
attendance and welcomed the
guests.
A chapter from the new
study book, "A Mother-in-law
Story", and passages of Scrip-
ture were read by Mrs. Alma
Hargrave. The minutes of the
last meeting were read and ap-
proved by the secretary, Miss
Elva Foster. Roll call was an-
swered by payment of dues,
with 15 members and seven
guests in attendance.
The program for the evening
had Rev. Anderson showing
films and slides of their trip to
Ireland, with Mrs. Anderson
giving the names of places and
adding interesting notes. There
were also films of the opening
of the Seaway and a few family
films and slides.
The president, Mrs. William
Sothern read an article on ways
for groups to make motley.
Rev. Anderson closed the meet-
ing with prayer. Lunch was
served by Mrs. Arnetta Sothern
and Mrs. Frances King, assisted
by the president.
84 years ago, son of John Arm-
strong and Margaret Ellen
Sothern.
His wife, Elizabeth Anne
Hainstock whom he married in
1904 at Gorrie, predeceased
him 40 years ago.
Survivors are a son, Bruce,
with whom he resided and two
daughters, Mrs. Selby (Ruby)
Foster of Fordwich and Mrs.
Victor (Elizabeth) O'Brecht of
Toronto. A son predeceased
him.
There are also three broth-
ers, John of Howick Twp., Nel-
son of Fordwich and William of
Wingham, a sister, Miss Mar-
garet Armstrong of Fordwich
and five grandchildren and one
great grandchild. A sister, Mrs.
Bob (Jennie) Walker predeceas-
ed him.
Mr. Armstrong was a mem-
ber of Trinity Anglican Church
and service was conducted last
Wednesday from the Moir fun-
eral home by Rev. Geo. Ander-
son.
Pallbearers were John Gam-
ble, John MacNaughton, Jim
Mowatt, Bert Armstrong, Trev.
Hainstock and Douglas Holt.
The flower bearers were Wil-
liam Sothern, Scott Clarkson,
Harold Foster and Robert Hib-
berd.
