Review of 1963
Another year has passed. For
sotne it has been a prosperous
and happy one, while others
will remember it as a year of
tragedy, sorrow, and misfortune
The entertainment world had its
ups and downs, too, in 1963 —
its moments of despair and deep
sorrow and its successes and joys
also.
The year began sadly for the
magic town, for on January 2nd,
death stalked its streets and
claimed actor -producer Dick
Powell and actor Jack Carson
within only a few hours of each
other, both victims of cancer.
This was only the beginning.
Other Hollywood deaths this
year were comedy actress Zasu
Pitts, actor Monty Wooley, pro-
ducer John Farrow who was mar-
ried to actress Maureen O'Sulli-
van, actor and best -dresser
Adolphe Menjou, Indian actor
Sabu, and wife of the famous
producer Elia Kazan. Young
deaths shocked Hollywood, too.
Gorgeous singer -dancer -actress
Margarita Sierra, only :15, died
of a heart ailment and all of
'wild young Hollywood' wept
openly at her funeral. And22-
year-old Karyn Kupcinet was
found strangled in her apart-
ment, beginning a frantic
search for her murderer, who
will probably never be found.
The music world suffered its
losses too, in the deaths in a
plane crash of Nashville's
'Grand OIe Opry' stars Patsy
Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins, and
Cowboy Copas, and the subse-
quent death, in a car accident
while on his way to their fun-
erals, of Jack Anglin, one-half
of the Johny-and-Jack team.
Edith Piaf, the petite French
singer died in Paris in October;
and in December, Dinah Wash-
ington, American pop singer
who had so many hits with
Brooke Benton, was found dead
by her seventh husband, foot-
ball star Dick Lane, at their
home in Detroit. She had tak-
en an overdose of sleeping pills,
supposedly accidentally.

Unhappiness didn't all ap-
pear in the guise of physical
death, Many dreams died too,
when couples headed for the
divorce courts. Young actress
Carol Lynley divorced. Mike
Selsman and received custody
of their wee daughter Jill.
Giant Jim Arness found he
couldn't rule his wife as he does
Dodge City, for 'Matt Dillon'
also received a divorce. Guy
Madison and his wife Sheila,
Jane Wyman and Freddy Karger,
actress Jill St. John and her mil..
lionaire husband Lance Revent-
low, old 'Checkmate' actor
Doug McClure and Barbara
Ott
1}y Vonni Lee
Luna, and singers Fran Jeffries
and Dick Haymes, all decided
to go their separate ways. And
Richard Burton received his
divorce in Mexico from wife
Sybil, expecting the same kind
of action from Eddie Fisher, so
his estranged wife Elizabeth
Taylor and Burton can marry.

Despite all this, Hollywood
was not miserable all year.
Wedding bells rang joyously for
a number of couples. Tony
Curtis married actress Christine
Kaufmann in January; then
Louis Prima, ex-husband of
Keely Smith, followed suit and
also married a girl young
enough to be his daughter, Gia
Malone, who sings with his
band. Comedienne Carol Bur-
nett married producer Joe
Hamilton in Mexico, hours af-
ter his divorce became final;
Desi Arnaz, ex-husband of
Lucille Ball, married a lovely
red-haired divorcee in Las Ve-
gas; actor Dwayne Hickman,
who used to star in The Bob
Cummings Show and now has
his own series, married young
starlet Carol Christianson; and
Natalie Wood's baby sister,
Lana, married a young Holly-
wood millionaire, only to have
the marriage annulled almost
before it happened: Nat's ex-
husband Bob Wagner, married
Marion Donen, ex-wife of pro-
ducer Stanley Donen; swim-
ming star Esther Williams wed
actor Fernando Lamas; Dick
Powell's widow, June Allyson,
wed barber Glenn Maxwell;
Broadway stars Geraldine Page
and Tip Torn tied the knot;and
actress Hope Lange wed movie
producer Alan Pakula. The
musical world had its share of
weddings songs too. Pop sing-
er Brenda Lee married her child-
hood sweetheart in Nashville;
Dinah Shore wed businessman
Maurice Smith; Anthony New -
ley wed actress Joan Collins;
Rick Nelson, Paul Anka, Fran-
kie Avalon, and Dion, shatter-
ed young girls' dreams by tak-
ing wives; Bob Goulet married
Broadway star Carol Lawrence;
and actress -singer Connie Stev-
ens
tevens married actor Jim Stacy in
a beautiful church ceremony in
October.

1964 is stretched before us.
May we wish the entertainment
world a prosperous and a rela-
tively quiet year. May we wish
our American friends much
peace and joy to help them for-
get the sorrow and tragedy of
1963. And may 1 wish you a
healthy and a happy year, when
every good thing comes your
way.
