HEAD OFFICE WINGHAM Phone 357-2050 Banquet for Team Trophies and Gifts Presented This past week -end brought the ball season to a fine climax in the Belgrave community, when about a hundred interested people joined with the Inter- mediate Ball Club at a banquet held in the basement of Knox United Church. After everyone enjoyed a hearty meal Ivan Dow, on behalf of the ball club, thanked the women of Belgrave and Calvin -Brick churches. Bill Coultes, on behalf of the community, presented Geo. Procter, the captain, with a ring engraved as follows, "W,O. A.A. Champs, 1963". The other members received a gift certificate for the same. This was a pleasant surprise for the team and George made a very n Anti -Freeze Now! Don't wait until this happens to you! Come in now and let us install anti- freeze before the cold spell comes. George Johnston presented pen and pencil sets to four boys who had helped throughout the sea- son and who had played when some of the regulars were ab- sent. A Most Valuable Player tro- phy was donated and presented by Ross Robinson to GlennCoul- tes, who had been chosen by his team members. The Bat- ting Champion trophy was do- nated and presented by Ross Anderson to Jim Coultes. Run- ner-up for this award was Ivan Dow. Ken Wheeler, the M.0-. for the evening, introduced the guest speaker, George Wicke the convener of W.O.A.A. soft- ball. Mr. Wicke congratulat- ed the Ball Club for its achieve- ments for fine team -work and he formally presented the two team trophies. He commended the Belgrave Community for the excellent manner in which they showed their appreciation, for example the presentation of the rings, the gathering of sport - minded fans at the banquet, and the interest taken in sport for the younger set. To sum up the seasons activ- ities one of the most regular fans read the following eulogy: DOWN THE PLAY -OF,' TRAIL Now Belgrave is rather small, And they have boys who can play ball. And in the spring they hear the call "Come on Boys and lets play ball". We have a ball team that's hard to beat, And to watch them play, it is a treat, DON'T FORGET THE ANNUAL PANU'T SAL SPONSORED BY THE LIONS CLUB OF WINGHAM Tuesday Evening, December lith MEMBERS OF THE WINGHAM LIONS CLUB WILL MAKE A HOUSE-TO-HOUSE CANVASS OF THE TOWN TUESDAY EVENING OF NEXT WEEK They Will Offer You Peanuts -Peanut Butter - Mixed Nuts A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO BUY NUTS IN ADVANCE OF THE Every Cent You Spend aids in the Lions program of Child Welfare and Community Service work. ALL PROFITS from the peanut sale are devoted to these projects. SEASON Yes, We Want Spectacles Several persons have asked whether the Lions will accept used eye glasses for shipment to India. The answer is YES. Have them ready for the can- vasser when he calls. They are the best in every way True sports as everyone will say. They argue some, but not too loud And are always pleasing to the crowd. They played right through their schedule And proved to be the best, And on in farther fields they went To bring that trophy home to rest. Formosa was the first to see Just how tough these boys could be. It took five games to do the job And wiped them up on Formosa Sod. Welisely was the next in line And here the boys did right fine_ In three straight they took it all, And won the B. trophy of soft- ball. Whitechurch thought as a Junior team, They had a right to show their steam. It took five games for the boys to show They had lots of git and lots to go. The Saints were next along the trail, And they had Wingham on their tail. They came out loud, with all their scorn, And placed their remarks at coach Horne. The Saints went out and took No. 1 But then the series was far from WW1. In number two with subs in places, We wiped the smile right off their faces. In number three there's a story to tell. Thats when the boys began to jell. After nine innings the game was won, And Curly with strike -outs, had twenty-one. In the fourth game they carne far and wide, And it seemed everyone was on our side. The boys struck fast and the die was cast, The thing to do was make it last. Mulvey would crouch and make his sign, Curly would pinch it . pull the twine, And by his face you would never know Whether it would be fast or it would be slow. They took that game from that heckling crew, They sure done well for being "home brew". That was four down and one to go, Everyone said, "flurry up boys, or it will blow." Linwood came out without much show And we felt we could take them before the snow. They tried to body, Oh that dirty guy, And Glenn he fell and weheav- ed a sigh, But back he came and show.cd his grit And we had little trouble tak- ing it. We took the next one twelve to two, No Belgrave fans were feeling blue, And if the weather would just stay fine We'd have that trophy in jig time. The air was clear and the ground was damp, We felt we could lick them like a postage stamp. Few braves came from the Lin- wood sticks, They couldn't keep track of our boys tricks. The crowd they cheered and the boys stood fast They wanted this one to be the last. Two out in the ninth and one to go, Will it be high or will it be low? Windham Advance -Times, Thursday, Dec. 5, 1963 — Page 7 The umpire called strike one, strike two We clung to our seats as if stuck by glue. Then he hit it out towards town hall, George ran like the devil and caught that ball. The cheers went up and every- one hollared, You could have heard them at Geo. Pollards. Jim Inglis came with the silver- ware, And that made everyone stand and stare. We had no parade but we show- ed delight And kept that show just for to- night. We're proud as proud as you can see To have boys like this take the trophy. When next year comes we'll all go back There'll be Jesse, and Fred, and Little Jack, Geo. and Mart. and all the rest, To see the ballteam that plays best. And from those Brussels gals and guys, We heard their groans and heard their sighs, From Hugh and Tom and Jim and Ken, We know next year they'll be back again. To give credit where credit is due I leave it all right up to you. To single anyone would be un- fair, I couldn't do it, or I'd have less hair, We all know to be on the beam You work together to make a ball team. And as the boys go on thru' life And each one has got a wife, They'll look at that ring and re- member me, And of the triumphs they won in '63. Stan: "So you taught your wife to play poker?" Joe: "Sure, and it was a great idea. Last Saturday night I won back nearly a third of my salary."
