Proper Shoes and
Posture Prevent
Some Backache
"Oh, my aching back!"
How many times have you heard
someone utter those words? Per-
haps
erhaps you have said them your-
self. It's an all -too -common
complaint.
Almost everyone suffers from
backache at one time or an-
other, and complaints run from
that of a dull, uncomfortable
ache to an almost incapacitat-
ing pain.
Some physicians credit soft
beds, soft chairs and other com-
forts of modern civilization with
an increase in the number of
persons who suffer from low
back pain, but the trouble can
also be organic or even psycho-
logical.
Low back pain may occur at
any age but it seems to bother
middle-aged persons most. It
occurs in both sexes and in all
races, and is more common
with people who do work that
requires stooping or lifting.
Good posture of the entire
body is important in preventing
low back pain. Sit with the
head, shoulders and trunk erect.
When standing, the spine should
be straight -- not a "ramrod"
posture, but straight.
A low-heeled shoe is best for
standing or walking. High -
heeled shoes tend to throw the
posture off balance and in-
crease strain on the low back.
Loafers, ballet shoes andsneak-
ers also may lead to bachache
if worn extensively.
When lifting heavy objects,
keep your back straight and lift
with the knees and thigh mus-
cles, rather than bending over
and straining the spine.
Like many other ailments,
backache may be aggravated
by emotional tension or anxiety.
Treatment of backache var-
ies with the cause. When it is
due to strain, rest, heat and
pain reliever will help. Mas-
sage used in moderation, may
help to relieve discomfort.
Your doctor may also recom-
mend exercise to strengthen the
muscles of the back and to im-
prove posture.
Wilson C, McCoig, Chat-
ham, past president of the Co-
operative Medical Services Fed-
eration of Ontario, spoke at the
16th annual meeting of Huron
Co-operative Medical Services
held in the Council Chambers,
Clinton, on Wednesday.
His topic, Recent Develop -
Meats in Prepaid Health Care
Plans, was fact -filled and time-
ly, providing the members with
a valuable insight into current
progress in the planning of a
Government-sponsored Medical
Health Plan.'
Mr, McCoig, who is secre-
tary -manager of Kent Co-oper-
ative Medical Services, repre-
sents the Medical Co-opera-
tives on the liason committee
set up to study Ontario's medi-
cal care needs.
Members voted approval of
new coverage added during the
past year, which included the
addition of chiropractic care ef-
fective June 1, 1963, and a
new Comprehensive Medical
Care Plan instituted August 1,
1963.
Re-elected for a three-year
term were: president, Fordyce
Clark, R. R, 5, Goderich; direc-
tors; Mrs. O. G. Anderson, R.
R. 5, Wingham; Lorne Rodges,
R. R• 1, Goderich; Kenneth
Johns, Woodham.
During the year, the Major
Medical Plan paid claims total-
ling $17,983.00 and the Im-
proved Surgical (with In -Hospi-
tal Medical) paid a total of
$55, 003.00 in claims.
Current assets are $148,519.
