BIGGEST OF ITS KIND
The elephant seal, or sea
elephant, largest of all seals,
gets its name not only from its
size but also from its nose. The
males have a large, overhang-
ing, proboscis -like snout which,
when the seal is angered or
otherwose excited, becomes
filled with air. There are two
distinct types of this mammal --
the northern elephant seal and
the southern or Antarctic ele-
phant seal. The adult males
vary from 15 to 20 feet and
weigh 5000 pounds or more.
The blubber of the elephant seal
is almost pure oil; a large bull
may yield as much as 200
gallons.
