Review week Oct. 9-16 "Telescope" featured a glance at the 'Flying Wallendag when its host Fletcher Markle visited them at the Enchanted Forest in New York's Adiron- dack Mountains, and I don't know about you, but I shivered when I saw young Tino taking his first steps on the tightrope. Surely it is enough that these people who are accustomed to this circus life, remain after a tragedy, but allowing a 12 - year -old boy to risk his life by beginning the same business, is rather foolish, I would say. Could they not talk him into pursuing a nice safe career, like that of a dentist, or a police- man?? As you no doubt recall, this was the family that met its Waterloo two years ago in De- troit, when their human pyra- mid toppled to the ground from the high wire. Two of its mem- bers were killed, and one crip- pled for life. But bravely the rest of the family, among them the father, uncle, cousin, and widow of one of the men killed, stuck to their old traditional 'show must go on' convictions, and they are just as active and popular today. Tino is the first on the new generation. His grandfather Karl Wallenda, and his mother are both top artists. His father was one who perished in Detroit. His life will not be a bed of roses, but I suppose as long as there are Wallendas, there will be a circus act, and I suppose too, that the circus audience is glad they are as dedicated as they are. 0--0--0 It is now a full month since Kitchener -Waterloo's CKCO- TV switched from CBC affili- ation to the CTV network (the official switchover date was September 15), and although reports from the viewing public have been both pro and con, it appears it has been met mainly with approval. Octo- ber 12th were wedding days a country apart. June Allyson, 39 -year-old actress and widow of actor Dick Powell who died of cancer in January, married 31 -year-old Glenn Maxwell, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He calls himself a 'hair stylist'; actually, he is a plain old 'bar- ber' ! After a one -day honey- moon on a yacht, they flew back to Beverly Hills, where they will live. Her two child- ren, Pamela, 14, and Ricky, 13, accompanied them. 0--0--0 In the San Fernando Valley in California, on the same day, wedding bells rang for actress Connie Stevens and actor Jim Stacey, in one of the biggest deals that Holly'd has ever seen. She is the 24 -year-old cutie who plays 'Cricket' on "Hawaii- an Eye" on TV, has made a number of movies, too. He is in "Summer Magic" which play- ed at the local theatre here that very night. This is the first marriage for both; she broke an engagement to actor Gary Clarke earlier this year. 0--0--0 News was not all sunny for the world of show business last week, though, and Paris said goodbye to its little 'sparrow',• Edith Piaf, 47, when she died of an internal hemorrhage on the 12th. She was world- famous, often appeared with Ed Sullivan, and brought down the house every time she did. Her recording of "Milord" a few years ago, was the most tre- mendous thing she ever did. Her life was a constant struggle, what with all the unhappiness and illness she experienced. Her second husband, a Greek hairdresser, survives. 0--0--0 More news, not quite as tra- gic for the world but just as sad for the people involved, carne when Jane Wyman announced. she would 'again' divorce bus, band, bandleader Freddy Kar - ger. They were married in the early '50s, divorced two years later, then decided to try again in 1961. This, though appears to be the end of their escapades.
