MUSTANGS LOSE
TO GODER+CH
On Wednesday, last week,
the Wingham Mustangs played
their first home game of the
Season and suffered their first de,
feat at the hands of Goderich.
Displaying good passing and a
rushing attack which chalked
up more than double the yards
gained on the ground by Wing -
ham, the visitors came out on
the top end of a 12-6 decision.
The scoreless first quarter
was highlighted by an intercep-
tion by Lynn Finnigan which
stopped a Goderich drive deep
into Mustang territory, In the
second quarter, Wingham's
starting quarterback, Don Mc-
Dowell, piloted his team in a
series of plays which was cli-
maxed by Tom Ellacott's touch-
down run. The convert at-
tempt went wide, However,
Goderich tied the score with the
minute flag up, on a 45 yard
touchdown pass. The convert
attempt hit the cross -bar and
bounced back onto the field.
In the second half, Goderich
capitalized on a fumble and
scored the winning touchdown
on a pass and run play. They
then held off the Wingham of-
fence in the remainder of the
game for their victory.
Approximately half the stu-
dents (the male half) wisely
divided their viewing time be-
tween the football game and
the cheerleaders who enthusias-
tically urged the Mustangs on.
This year's cheerleaders are
Ruth Michie, Julia Thornton,
Wilhelmina Smith, Marg
O'Malley, Bonnie Jardin and
Helen Currie. The official
cheerleaders were assisted (if
that is the right word) by Rod
Cameron, Jim Nasmith, Dave
Wenger, and Bob Beattie, who
came exotically disguised as
feminine cheerleaders and en -

The game was played in the
Wingham ball park since the
new football field at the high
school isn't ready yet and the
old one is taken up to a large
extent by a portion of the new
addition.
Prior to the game, Mr.
Campbell, the physical edu-
cation teacher and football
coach, held a football clinic
during the lunch hours for stud-
ents interested in learning the
fundamentals of the game.
WRESTLING STARTER
Wrestling, a relatively new
sport at W.D.H.S„ got under
way last week. The wrestling
coach is Mr. Gnay, a first-
year biology teacher at Wing -
ham. About 25 prospective
mat -men were on hand, many
of them from Grade nine.
THE DAY THE RAINS
CAME DOWN
Bored students received a
welcome diversion on a rainy
Thursday last week when a leak
developed in the school roof.
Water began to drip down
steadily from a point in the
ceiling of the main hall, just
opposite the office. A shiny
red pail was placed underneath
to catch the water. This, of
course, inspired many terrible
puns about 'kicking the bucket.

EVERYBODY OUT!
A surprise fire drill was held
at the high school Monday
morning. When the fire alarm
went off at 10:47, the students
filed obediently out of the
building. They were disap-
pointed to learn that it was a
practice and not the real thing.
MOUNTAIN LiON
HAS MANY NAMES
The New World mammal
found over the widest area is
the mountain lion. It ranges
from the southern tip of South
America to northern British
Columbia. It is also known as
the puma, a word from the
Quechuan tongue, language of
the Incas of ancient Peru. An-
other name, cougar, is chiefly
literary. The big animal is
also known as the panther; the
