McPherson's Garage Disp ays 1964 Buick
•
The new Buicks now on display at McPherson's Garage in Teeswater emphasizes
the wider, lower look with distinctive grille treatment for each series.
The Wildcat Sport Coupe shown here features a new broad, die-cast molding which
extends from the wheel opening to the rear bumper. Ventiports are now stacked, three
high, just ahead of the front door. Three new engines have been added to the Buick line-
up for 1964 to include extra economy in one series and flashier performance in another.
For 1964, Buick takes a gia.nt step forward in the evolution of torque converter -type
transmission with the Super Turbine "300," a two -speed unit and the Super Turbine
"400" which is a three -speed unit designed to handle the greater power of the 401 and
425 cubic inch engine and the additional vehicle weight of the luxury series cars.
NEW BRICKS SHOWN AT TEESWATER
TEDSWA'1'.,R, Ont.—McPher-
son Motors introduced its 1964
Buicks —a lineup of 26 models
that features two new super
turbine transmissions providing
up to 43 percent more wheel
thrust, along with. three new
engines and a host of styling
changes that include an all-new
roomier Special series built for
the first time in Canada.
Doug McPherson, proprietor
of McPherson Motors, well
known throughout the area be-
cause of his TV, radio and news-
paper use of the slogan "See.
Mac for a Hack"—proudly show-
ed off one of the new Buick
models for us.
Here are some of the high-
lights he pointed out:
Two new Super Turbine trans-
missions that improve perform-
ance and gasoline mileage. Both
transmissions are lighter in
weight and .have fewer working
parts.
A new V-6 engine with greater
cubic inch displacement that
provides ,better performance for
the larger Specials in which it
is standard equipment.
A compact new Iightweight
aluminum V-8 engine with a
cast-iron block and 300 -cubic -
inch displacement that is the
lightest weight V-8 on the
market.
A high -performance engine
with two four -barrel carbure-
tors, 10.25 to 1 compression ratio
And 425 -cubic -inch displacement.
An entirely .new Special line
using a frame for thefirst time,
with three inohes more wheel-
base and 1111/2 inches additional
length,
A completely restyled lineup of
LeSabre, Wildcat and Electra
225 models. These, Mac showed
us out of his full colour Buick
brochure, because Mac's place
just isn't big enough to hold all
the Buick models at one time.
"Buick's 26 new models come
in six series," Mac told us, "the
Special, Skylark, LeSabre, Wild-
cat, Electra 225, and Riviera,"
The Riviera sports coupe, in-
troduced last year as a limited -
production model, maintains its
exclusive exterior styling. How-
ever, inside there are numerous
interior refinements that add to
its distinction.
Buick's new Super Turbine
transmissions, the Super Turbine
400 and the Super Turbine 300,
are among the most important
single development in the long
history of the torque -converter
transmission which Buick pion-
eered in 1948.
The Super Turbine 400 is
standard on Riviera and Electra
models and optional on the
Wildcat and LeSabre series, The
Super Turbine 300 will be avail-
able as optional equipment on
ail models in the 'Special series,
and also on alt LcSahre models

except the Estate Wagon,
In addition to an improvement
in performance and economy,
coupled with smoothness of 'op-
eration, the new transmissions
are great weight savers due to
extensive use of aluminum.
Basically, the Super Turbine
400 is a three -element type tor-
que," Mac explained, thinking
we looked a little confused.
"The Super Turbine 300 has
two forward speed ratios. In ad-
dition it has Buick's famed
'Switch the Pitch' feature which
increases torque multiplication
for added performance in pass-
ing." Mac looked at us as though
that should make everything
clear,
"The new ST 300 transmission
for the Special backs up new en-
gines. The V-6 is up from 198 -
cubic -inch displacement to 225,
with new features designed for
better performance, economy and
reliability.
"The 300 -cubic -inch aluminum
V-8 engine combines the best
features of last year's engine
into the new powerplant. This
engine is standard on the Le -
Sabre and improves gasoline
,mileage as much as 16 percent."
Mac knew he had struck home.
We've been trying for years to
save on gas,
"By using a east -iron block,
Buick's engineers were able to
increase the ,aluminurn V-8 en-
gine's displacement to 300 cubic
inches without increasing block
size," said Mac. "And through
the use of aluminum cylinder
heads, water -pump covers, in-
take manifold and many other
parts, the advantage of light
weight was retained. Optional ,on
the Special and LeSabre series is
the same V-8 engine with a four -
barrel carburetor. For the first
time, dual exhausts are avail-
able as an option on all Special
V-8 models, except Estate Wa-
gons."
Standard on all Estate Wa-
gons, Wildcat and Electra 225
models is the 40i -cubic -inch V-8
with four -barrel carburetor and
10.25 to 1 compression ratio. The
425 -cubic -inch engine is standard
on the Riviera.
The 425 - cubic - inch engine,
with either one or two four -
barrel carburetors, is available
as an option an Wildcat and
Electra 225 models. This some
engine, with two four -barrel car-
buretors, is optional on the Riv-
iera, A high -output camshaft is
combined with the multiple car-
buretors.
Some of the more salient sty-
ling features of the new models,
as Mac explained, are:
Special series — longer, wider,
roomier. Front bumper com-
pletely wraps around. Curved
glass in the side windows inte-
grates the lower body with the
upper, Frame construction and
added size improves ride and
roadability. Added height gives
easier access, more comfort,
Skylark four -door sedan add-
ed to lineup of convertible and
two -door coupe. Frameless glass
windows like the Riviera in the
Skylark coupe -- ventiports be-
come integral part of side .mold-
ing. New die-cast grille—special
vinyl roof cover design,
LeSabre wider, lower front
appearance, New wrap-around
bumper, New die -east grille.
Headlamps moved outward. New
front fenders and hood, Hori-
snntal tail lamps extend from
hack panel into rear quarters.

pearance. Ventiports are of new
design and are placed one above
the other. Nl'w four -door sedan
added to present line-up of two-
door coupe, four -door hardtop
and t.nnvertihte, Wider choice of
interior trims, Smart new grille
en hit n('1'$ Kick
Electra 225 --- distinctive grille
treatment gives (lean new front
appearance. Cornering light re-
styled. New ventiports mounted
flat against the fender. Vertical
tail lights are integral parts of
the rear fenders, 'Fender skirts
enclosing the rear wheels enupi-
ed with fu11 length moulding
give the Ek'etrn a longer, lower
appearance.
In addition to exterior styling.
improvements have been matte
in the 1964 line in a number of
handling and mifety features.
Aluminum four-wheel brakes
are continued LILT all regular
models, and brake drums on
Special series cars are finned to
increase cooling capacity.
Specials and Skylarks have
new front and rear suspension
systems, along with new rear
axles.
As Mac ran his hand lovingly
over the shiny 1964 Buick an dis-
play, he said, "Isn't that some
hack?"
Leaving a grave, at which
he had just placed some flowers
a man noticed an old Chinese
gentleman placing a bowl of
rice on a nearby grave. He
asked, cynically:
"When is your friend going
to come up to eat the rice?"
"Same time your friend
comes up to smell the flowers."
